It had been two months since Toriel took you in. She had taken great care of you, and told you stories of the past children in the Ruins, how some of them were abandoned by their families as well. You had never questioned what happened to the children, but on second thought, you'd rather not know... Toriel gave you your own room, at least. You never had your own room after your Mom died. The house was taken, and Father downgraded to a two bedroom. Your father couldn't afford the place on his own, so he got a horrible roommate right off, leaving you to sleep elsewhere. Often enough, you were awoken at night, anyway, thanks to your Father doing... Whatever in his drunken state.

"Sam? Are you okay?" You heard Toriel ask, "Are you hungry?"

You shrugged, but your stomach said otherwise, and growled like a pride of starving lions, you sighed... "Yeah..."

Toriel changed to a softer, but more stern tone, "Have you been skipping meals again, Sam? Why?"

You sighed again, "I just... Don't feel like eating..."

Toriel gave you a look, but it quickly faded, "Please, Sam... It's okay, I'm not mad. Just don't forget to eat your meals... "

You forever sighed, "I'm very lonely..." You say, almost too quietly to hear.

Toriel put a paw over her mouth, thinking to herself for a moment, "Child, how about I teach you some magic? You can protect yourself, and I can let you through the basement." Magic? Can Humans even wield magic? Reluctantly, you agreed. "Great to hear, child! Come down with me, and I will show you how to channel you magic!" She gently grabbed your hand and lead you down the hall and the stairs to the basement, where a training dummy was standing there.

"Toriel... W-will I be able to c-cast magic?" You asked shyly.

She chuckled, "Of course! Every Monster and Human has an extent of a magical ability. Some, it's healing. Others..." She summoned fireballs at her palms, "Can have the pure destructive power of fire at their hand." You stare in awe as Toriel puts out the fire with a wisp of a hand.

She got behind you, "Your soul looks to be a little different... I had a child with a soul kind of like yours. The boy's name was Cody, his soul was the purest orange you'd ever seen, the color of Bravery...Then there was another... They ended up like Cody." She took a second look at your soul, "Hm... Your soul is different... But it shouldn't affect your magic." Different? How so? She moved your arms and hands forward and stepped back, "Here child, put energy into your hands, and concentrate. Pretend like the energy of your soul is flowing to your palms, and flowing out of you."

You did as she said, and breath... In... And out... picturing magic rushing through you... And you forced it out of your hands, a force of energy bursted from your palm, hitting the dummy, and knocking it over. You stood there in amazement at what you just did.

Toriel laughed happily! "Well done, my child! You seem to be a natural! I am so proud of you! Do you want to practice this power?" You nodded slowly, Toriel seemed thrilled, "I've never seen a Human with so much magic potential! I will need to teach you to use it wisely..."

Understanding this, you nodded, and practiced. You practiced everyday. For two months straight, perfecting your ability. You still forgot to use your magic from time to time though, as Toriel also taught you the importance of Mercy, you often only acted in your battles, sparing all of the Monsters you came across. You sat in the room Toriel let you use, making small wisps of energy in the shape of butterflies. You had just taught yourself that trick last night, and practiced that all night to show Toriel that afternoon, when she got back from market. You hoped she will let you move on in the Underground, the Ruins were getting kind of cramped, as Monsters where raising families, and you had gotten to know most of them. Hell, you even met a ghost named Napstablook while heading to the Spider Bakery, a little ways back in the Ruins.
