MADISON WAS STARING BLANKLY out of the window infront of her. Max was still asleep on the bed behind but she couldn't sleep, she couldn't think straight. She looked to the clock to see it was six thirty a.m.
The brunette inhaled a breath before pushing herself up from Max's computer chair and she made her way towards her duffel bag in the corner of the room. Madison quietly unzipped the small compartment, pulling out the Alice In Wonderland extract.
She sat on the floor and unfolded the page. It was the chapter of when Alice met the caterpillar.
"Who are you?" said the caterpillar.
Alice replied, rather shyly, "I -- I hardly know, sir, just at present -- at least I know who I was when I got up this morning, but I think I must have been changed several times since then."
"What do you mean by that?" said the caterpillar sternly, "Explain yourself!"
"I can't explain myself, I'm afraid, sir," said Alice, "because I'm not myself, you see."
"I'm not myself." Madison repeated to herself, "I don't know who I am."
She still felt so numb, so lost. She related to Alice and the book in more ways than one, and it was the only way to remind herself that she wasn't alone in all of this.
"Mads?" A voice grogily spoke behind her. She jumped a little at the sudden noise, "You okay?"
Madison folded the page up and placed it back in the bag. She nodded and turned to Max, who was sleepily rubbing his eyes, "Yeah."
Max pushed himself up, looking over her in concern, "Did you get any sleep at all?"
She exhaled and dropped her gaze from his, "Not really, no."
He got off the bed and sat down beside her on the floor. He soothingly ran his hand down one side of her face and she leant into it, "You need some sleep."
"School starts soon." Madison told him.
Max sighed, "Your health is more important."
"I'm fine, Max, honestly." She said, pushing herself up as she pulled the bag with her, "I need to drop my stuff off at my dads before school aswell."
Madison moved towards the bed and placed the bag on it. Max followed her, "Does he know you want it to be permanent?"
"No." She responded, "But I know he'll understand, he always does."
