Later at the dinner table the air is thick with awkwardness. I ended up sitting in between my parents and across from Jake, who is sitting next to Alek. My dad has a knife on the table "in case the beef is too tough" yeah right, everyone knows it's a threat.
The main course was just brought out, which consists of steak and a twice baked potato, my favorite way to eat a potato may I add. I have to admit, it's a little weird eating a steak and looking across the table to see your boyfriend just drinking blood from a cup.
"Could you eat the steak if you wanted to?" My mother asks Jake.
"I could, it wouldn't do anything to me it just tastes unpleasant" he responds then looks at me and offers me a smile.
The table goes silent after that and conversation never resumes except for a few "this is delicious" here and there. After we finished eating my dad stood up and announced that we were leaving.
"Are you guys not coming to the ball?" Jake's mother asks me.
"No" my dad answers for me, even though I was going to say no anyway, "we have to look for my daughter"
"Right" says Jake's mother. "Take a few of our men, they will help" after she said that Jake volunteered.
"I mean there's no reason for me to go to the ball," he starts.
"There's a reason for every young man to go to the ball," my mother says,"to find someone they could be with"
Jake who is looking at his cup and twirling it in his hand, smiled. He then let go of his cup and reached across the table for my hand giving it a tight squeeze.
"I have all I need right here" Jake finally said, while picking up my hand and kissing it.
