I laid on my bed in my black dress as i looked up at the ceiling. Sherry Hite's funeral had just ended and i had went home alone. Everyone was there. Ethan, Damon, Mia, the whole cheer squad and most of the community. Sherry's mom had hugged me and i quickly withdrew myself and sat in the back by myself. Mia shot me a look but i just shook my head focused my eyes to the front.
Damon gave a beautiful speech and they quickly ended the ceremony with the cheer girls coming up to stand by the casket as we said our final goodbyes to one of our own. I quickly left as soon as they moved the service to graveside.
Ryland knocked on my door and i glanced over at him. He gave me a small smile. "You okay kid?"
I looked back at the ceiling. I could hear his footsteps against the carpet and i felt the bed shift as he sat beside me. "She had her whole life ahead of her, you know? She was so young and someone had to put a bullet in her chest."
He signed and brushed my hair back away from my face. "I don't know why things happen. I wish i had all the answers for you."
"It's because of the gang, isn't it?"
He nodded. "I think so. I'm having some of the guys secure the area and question some people. I told the police that we would help find whoever did this."
I gulped. "Can you just go away Ry. Please."
He nodded and game me a small smile. "If that's what you need. I love you Raine. Nothing will ever happen to you."
I nodded. He stood up from the bed and left my room, shutting the door behind him. I got up and locked it, making sure i would be alone. I took off my heels and threw them in the corner.
I pulled down the covers to my bed and got underneath them. I burrowed myself in them and wallowed in my sadness. Max jumped in bed beside me and i curled up against him. Quickly i fell asleep.
..................
Monday morning came around and i dragged my body out of bed. I glared at myself in the mirror as bags collected under my eyes. I stepped into the hot shower and scrubbed my hair numbly.
I stepped out of the shower and dried off, throwing my hair in a towel wrap. I put on foundation, concealer and added mascara.
I threw on a tee shirt with my high school logo on it and a pair of dark wash jeans. I jammed my feet into a pair of my white slip on vans and tossed my book bag onto my shoulders. Max followed me down the stairs into the kitchen to where the boys were eating breakfast.
I grabbed a banana and strawberry body armour out of the fridge and an apple out of the bowl on the counter.
"Wow you're alive."
I glared at Mason and launched the apple at his face. "You might want to rethink those words moron."
He rubbed his nose and looked at me with sad eyes. "Look Raine, I didn't mean it like that."
I snorted and turned away from them as Mia honked from the driveway. I slammed the front door shut behind me and walked to Mia's car. When i got in she handed me my usual coffee and i just gave her a look.
"I thought you would need it a lot earlier today. I couldn't sleep so i left early."
I nodded and took a sip of the goodness that always seemed to bring me to life. "Have your parents been idolizing over you like my brother has?"
She sighed. "I think they are worried i'll break. They want me to see counseling."
I looked out the window. "Maybe it isn't a bad idea Mia."
She rolled her eyes and shoved my shoulder. "We'll be fine Ray. We always are."
I couldn't help but hesitate on that as she pulled into her assigned parking lot. I got out the car and shrugged my book bag onto my shoulders.
I saw Ethan get out of his jeep on the other side of the parking lot. His hair was a mess and he was wearing a red and white stripped polo with kaki chub shorts.
I stopped and took a breathe. "You should go talk to him you know. Since we are all dying and all."
I shot her a glare and she shooed my away. I grunted and made my way to Ethan. He was talking to Eli, the freshman's older brother at the party. Eli spotted me and nodded in my direction.
Ethan looked at me and i have a small smile. He said something to Eli and walked toward me. He stopped a foot away and gripped his book bag straps.
"I'm sorry. For everything."
He gave me a small smile. "You're sorry for me stopping you from having sex with me?"
I grinned. At that remark i knew we would be okay. "Yeah, i guess i am."
He rolled his eyes, grabbed my hand, and pulled me into him. I wrapped my arms around his neck and snuggled into him. I closed my eyes and breathed him in as he pulled me in closer.
"We'll be okay Ray."
I nodded and pulled away from him. I brushed a stray tear away and he put his arm over my shoulders so we could walk to class. Mia stood with some of the other girls by the set of lockers by the girls bathroom. She gave me a smile as she saw me and Ethan and gave us her thumbs up. It's not like she didn't know what would happen, we always made up.
The bell rang and Ethan and I walked to our first class which was English. We sat toward the back and he kicked his feet up on the chair in front of him.
We handed in our homework from the weekend and Mr. Loveday stopped at my desk. "The guidance counselor wants to see you. You can go now if you would like."
I took a deep breath and nodded. I grabbed my bag and nodded at Ethan, making my way to the door. i walked to the office where the guidance counselors office was and i knocked on her door.
"Come in."
I rolled my eyes and pushed the door open. The guidance counselor, Jane Gibbs, was sitting at her desk in the corner on the right side of the room, typing away on her laptop.
She looked up at me, a piece of her blonde hair falling out of her bun, and waved to the seat in front of her desk. "Have a seat Raine. It's good to see you."
I plopped down and tossed my book bag onto the floor. "Mind telling me why i am here?"
She gave me a small smile. "I'm sure you are well aware of the situation you witnessed last Friday. Going through something like that, it's normal it would be something i would have to check up on. "
I snorted. "How could i ever forget such a situation?"
She nodded. "So how are you doing? Are you eating and doing your normal routine?"
I sat up and leaned forward on my knees. "Look, i'm fine. What happened sucked, but we can't change it. So stop pestering me about how i'm doing and start worrying about her siblings or her best friend or perhaps her damn family."
Miss Gibbs set down her pen and crossed her arms. "Okay Raine. Have a good day and please come to me if you have any issues."
I picked up my book bag and stormed out of the room. I walked out of the office and put my back against the wall and slid down till my butt hit the floor.
My family was the reason that this girl couldn't live her life. And i was going to put an end to whoever was doing this.
