Bearing West, 20000 feet ASL, Phoenix's Globemaster

"And by the way, change those call-signs."
"Change those call names?" Y/N thought, "What is the General up to?"
Suddenly Gray walked over, "Sir, I agree with the General, you suck at giving names..."

Y/N was appalled. The man who made names out of acronyms said he sucked at giving names? That means Y/N must be real bad at giving names.
"Fine Gray, what do you suggest I should do?"
"Let them pick themselves, sir."
"Ok then, announce that. Then report to me their new call signs."
"Roger!"

(I decided to use their original call names... :P)

Moments after the issue of names was solved, alarms blared.
"Sir! We have tangoes on our six! Too many to count, too fast to shake!"
"Can we take them down?"
"Sir... this is a transport plane..."
"Yeah... fuck..."

Over the sound of the engines comes the sound of puncturing metal, followed by engine stutter and an explosion.

"We're loosing power in engine 3! Engine 2 down!"
"We're going to have to land!" Shouted Goose, the pilot.
"Do what you have to do!" Y/N shouted, "I'll figure something out!"
"Roger!"

Y/N quickly went to Gray who was strapping parachutes to the vehicles.
"Gray! The fuck you doing!" Y/N shouted, "We'll need those!"
"Sir! I believe riding the car with the parachutes is better sir!"
"The fu—" Y/N was cut off by Charter shouting, "Sir! We need to dump some weight to land!"
A smug grin of victory painted Gray's face as he replied, "Roger that!"
"Ok then, everybody in the transports! Now!" Y/N commanded.

Hearing his command everyone got moving. The heavily turbulent plane did not faze any of these soldiers, nor did the burning engine and bullet holes. Tossing gear and supplies onto the transport before hopping on. After confirming the soldiers were on the transports, Y/N climbed into the turret of Offender.
"Boot com link!"
"Com link on!"
"Ready for drop!"
"Roger that! Dropping altitude and opening hatch!"

The dazzling light was blinding, but that didn't stop Y/N from shooting down the pesky tangoes with an auto-cannon. The reverberating sound of the 27 mil drowned out the sounds of the jet engines, yet this sound was somewhat soothing for team Phoenix as their six was covered well. Everyone in the burning plane knew that there was only two things that could stop Y/N in the armored turret, no tangoes or no ammo.

As their plane descended, less and less tangoes were tailing them. But the tangoes were relentless, spraying the C-17 continuously. If one were to see the plane now they would probably think Swiss cheese not aircraft, but the plane held through.

After descending to drop altitude, Gray reported, "Safe drop altitude achieved! When you're ready!"
"Drop now!"

The instant those two words were heard, three iron vehicles dropped out the back of the C-17. It was a spectacle which shocked the tailing pilots, nevertheless they continued to pepper the Globemaster. Suddenly the transport plane pulled up hard instantly entering a stall but all too fast for the jets following it, causing multiple high speed collisions.
Over the radio, Charter could be heard saying, "Sir Y/N, it was an honor serving with you! Good luck, over and out."

Unable to see what happened to the plane Y/N was confused, but the radio static after confirmed the worst. Right after the vehicles touch down, Y/N jumps out in a rush to assess the situation. But the scene he had to bear witness destroyed his calmness, and stirred his mind. At that moment a commander fell to his knees not as a soldier, but as a man who lost his brothers. The pain of failing his own vow broke the man. Y/N was broken, his mind shattered.

The other members filed out of the vehicles to see the flaming debris of a once home-on-wings fall to the ground scattered. Tina and Meghan instantly turned to Y/N and asked, "You alright?" Holding back tears, Y/N plastered on his best smile, replying, "Yes, yes I am." Meghan did not believe him in the slightest as she has seen the same, it was the moment before one broke, the irreparable kind. Knowing this the she ran over to him and embraced him to comfort him, and at that moment the emotions he had been repressing since the death of his parents poured out.

The others stood there as their commander burst into tears; The men turned away to hide their own and to give Y/N much needed privacy, Eliza stood there thinking of how weak the commander was crying over five lives, yet Tina saw differently. What Tina saw was Y/N embracing Meg thus her feelings were of jealousy, yet that was not the only emotion she felt as she was also disturbed. She had not realized the pain Y/N was going through.

After a good while scavenging, team Phoenix set up camp a bit away from the debris. Far enough to be able to avoid a patrol, but close enough to hide there if the need arises. Y/N had already passed out due to exhaustion, but some of the other members remained vigilant. Atop the 'Commander' —nothing dirty intended— Jordan and Craig were keeping watch, making small talk to keep themselves busy.

"Man, this is going to be tough... dead in the middle of Federation Afghanistan with limited supplies surrounded by desert."
"Ugh, yeah... reminds me about that time I was deployed in Iraq."

The sound of stars crept up to them, as eerie as it was none were bothered.

Jordan suddenly spoke up, breaking the silence.
"What kind of baggage does Y/N have? I mean like why would several deaths shake him so bad?"
"I don't know either, but when I served with him he wasn't like this. I guess something happened while he was serving elsewhere or during the Fall, cus it seems like PTSD to me."
"I guess... must be painful. Then again, loosing brothers is painful."

The silence returned not long after and it stayed, only to be disturbed when watch was rotated. Black turned to blue and the stars disappeared before the silence was broken again. It was dawn when Y/N got up and prepared for the long journey ahead.

Assessing the GPS Y/N found that the closest safe area is Georgia and the closest major airfield is the city of Baku. They were going to have to get out of this desert using the shortest route possible, through the mountains. Luckily, the direction they are planning to go avoids Federation forces. Setting off the moment they are ready, team Phoenix ride through the desert.
