The day after operation Crushing Fist, brought to you by Chibi Frost sleeping on Chibi Y/N's chest, a jealous Chibi Valkyrie looking at them.
3RD POV
It was the day after the major operation. Now that Gibraltar was under full control of the army and all XOF presence is gone everyone is at ease. Team Phoenix are all now doing what ever they want, Gray developing tech as usual and most of the others joining in Commander Jalal's training regimen. Y/N was recovering from his injuries while training a few from his squad.
Y/N spent today bonding with his subordinates. He went around helping others improve. His doing this changes people's view of him. From an achievement hungry pushy commander to somewhat of an older brother. Why Y/N decided to change one would ask, it was about time was his answer. But that was all a facade. One used to hide away pain and guilt. One stemming from the failure to save a brother.
Away from the hustle-bustle of the compound three soldiers slaved away. Gray, Meghan, and Tina were working on some gear in the hangar. Gray, well being him, tinkered with the new toys that Jalal had given him. They were a RAIDER Class 1 MRAP and a portable armory. What he did with them needed not be said, even their creators wouldn't recognize them after.
Meghan on the other hand, was adjusting her brand new rifle as, albeit sadly, her favorite one was damaged beyond repair the other day. Adjusting her rifle like this reminded her of Kandahar. Her memories mostly revolves around her commander, crazy selfless no-man-left-behind guy who she had mocked. The guy who saved her from a sniper. He took the bullet got a scar and shrugged it off. Sadly for her, she never got to thank him as he was transferred to another post.
Meghan wasn't the only one reminiscing the past. Tina was conducting maintenance on the plane when she remembered her time in the JTF2. Especially that one SEALs JTF2 joint operation. Tina's memories brought her back to Alaska 14 years ago.
Down at the firing range Y/N had found himself drilling Eliza. Y/N deemed her "unable to shoot for shit" after a heated debate about marksmanship, and what ensued proved his point. Eliza could not consistently hit targets at medium range. Out of a three burst she kicks up dust with 2. Even with a recoil compensator.
"Haaah~ woman, next time you brag have the skill to back it."
"Oh, and you do? Hah, I bet you couldn't hit either."
Y/N, pissed, blindly drew a m9 off the table and fired, sideways. The sound of the gunshot was followed by the sound of the bullet hitting metal. Eliza was speechless.
"Yeah, it's not like I have many designated marksman awards. I only have like 9 eh- 10?"
"I didn't..."
"Yeah doesn't matter. Just learn to hit that target mid range, I can't have you dying."
Y/N's actions demolished Eliza's overconfidence. After pointing out her flaws and what she needed to do he left.
She asked herself, "Why does he care? It's not like I matter. I'm just another cog in a machine. But... he can't have me dying?"
Y/N spent the rest of the day changing from a commander to a brother. By the time the sun sank, Y/N made his way back to his bunk he was piss drunk. Spending time celebrating with the air crew. They had been left isolated on base during the operations, so cheering them up was his job.
2 days later, Gibraltar
Radio: buzzzzz beep. Bip bip bip bip. Bip bip.
The operator rushed to his station and began writing. It was a repeat message from the day before. After the message was conveyed, the operator looked, instantly running to his commander.
This is from Rig ... checking for other resistance cells, need help. Call us 30 3953462 and 125 9152074.
"This day and age? Phone numbers on broadcast?" Muttered the radio controller.
The instant the commander saw those numbers, he knew those weren't phone numbers.
"Y/N! Get over here! You have a new mission!"
"Yes sir! I'll head out now." Y/N said, running off to inform his crew.
"Sir! May I join this mission?"
"Maria, that's not up to me to decide."
"Thank you sir!" She saluted, before going off to join Y/N.
Not long after, team Phoenix's C-17 Globemaster loaded up on the run way. All the members already onboard. Y/N was thanking the commander for their assistance. The commander thanked him back and sent him off with one message change those call names.
Getting onto the plane, Charter, the navigator shouted, "Sir! Where to?"
"East China Sea"
