Have you ever looked back at your past and wonder if you made all the right decisions? Decisions like what friends to have or not to have, what sports to play, what college to attend, who to fall in love with... Some of the toughest decisions come easily. But I've learned that even the easiest of decisions, tend to be the hardest to figure out. Here is my story.
Chicago, Illinois
"Day, are you sure that you want to move to Atlanta?" I roll my eyes as I listen to my brother Kris ask me the same question for the hundredth time. "Dayla answer me."Picking up the pile of books on the table before turning around and walking back into the living room part of my apartment to see my brother still looking at me waiting for my answer. I sigh as I place the books into the almost full box. "Kris, we've had this conversation many times now. Yes I'm sure I want to move to Atlanta I need to start over."
"Yeah, but I don't understand why moving to a whole new state is the answer." Kris replies leaning down to pick up the box I finished packing.
"Lay off Kris. She's leaving Chicago and only going a few states over. It's not like she's leaving the country." I smile as my oldest brother Adam says as he drops more boxes in the living room.
"Kris you should feel honored she's lived in Chicago since 2015, since you and Jess moved here. I would love it if she would ever decide to move to Florida." my third brother Brock added.
I continued to listen to my three older brothers argue about why I should or shouldn't move, but my mind is 100% made up. I'm moving to Atlanta whether my brothers agree with it or not. "Hey sis." I jump being brought out of my world by my little brother Will.
"Hey, sorry I was spacing. What's up?" I asked as I notice him carrying something in his hand. "What's that?"
"Oh well you asked me to stop by the barn to make sure that the trailer was set up for the horses. And the barn told me to give you this picture." he said as he slowly handed me the picture.
Taking a look at the picture I feel the tears starting to build up. Taking a deep breathe in, I hold the picture to my chest and lower my head trying to control myself from breaking down. All of the sudden I feel 4 bodies move towards me.
"Sis, I'm sorry I shouldn't of taken the picture from the barn I should of known. I'm...." shaking my head I stop him.
"No Will, your fine it's not you. Its just... this picture I just feel guilty about what happened. I..."
"Day, what happened that day was NOT your fault. Do you hear me? It was not your fault. There was nothing you could of done to stop it." Brock responds by lifting my chin to make sure I'm looking at him.
"Brock is right Dayla. What happened to Ghost wasn't your fault. If Savanna would of listened to you when you felt heat in his leg and told her that she shouldn't jump him in the competition. It wouldn't of happened." Adam replies as the tears start to fall as I look back down at the picture.
The picture of myself, my one horse Lincoln and of Ghost. Ghost was a grey Quarter horse that was owned by a girl at the barn I keep my horses and compete at. During the last competition I noticed Ghost's one leg had flared up and had heat I told his owner, who only cared about winning. The outcome Ghost ended up getting injured and had to be euthanized. Shaking my head I put the picture down and take a deep breath. "This is one of the reasons you want to leave Chicago isn't it?"
I look over at Kris who has his arm around me. I nod. "It's one of the reasons. Kris I have loved being able to live in Chicago. Being able to spend time with you over the last couple years since you got signed by the Cubs, being able to hang out with the players and create friendships. Getting to be able to hang on the field with you and the dugout it's been the best years of my life. To being able to see you win MVP and the World Series in 2016. It's been amazing." I start not breaking eye contact with him. "But after Ghost and then the Zach issue of him thinking I should just give up everything on my career as a star equestrian. Just so he can continue his soccer career. I have to try to start over, even if leaving Chicago is the hardest decision to make."
