"Sabrina!" I heard her fake cheerful tone call my name as I walked over to our table which is outside. We were sitting outside in the middle of fall!.
"Prudence" I said in an equal fake cheerful tone as I pulled out my chair and took a seat. I crossed my arms over my chest, even with my red coat on it was a cold day.
"I love sitting outside in the cold weather, watching the mist in the distance, praise Satan!. Don't you agree?" Prudence smiled looking out onto the street.
"I prefer it to be a little warmer". I responded, I was starting to feel anxious as to why she had invited me here.
"The Sun reminds me too much of The False God" Prudence made a disgusted look on her face.
The Waitress comes over and I am relieved.
"I will have a Tea". Prudence orders before the waitress had even had the chance to greet us. She looked a little taken aback by Prudence's abruptness, but scribbled down her order in her notepad.
"And for you?" The waitress asked me, she almost sounded afraid that I might bite her head off or something.
"Please could I have a Caramel Latte? Thank you". I smiled sweetly and she returned the smile feeling relieved that I was friendly unlike Prudence. While we waited for our drinks we made small talk until they arrived.
"So, you probably are wondering why I invited you here today" Prudence begun as she stirred a spoonful of sugar into her tea. All I could do was look at her expectedly without giving away that I was so nervous.
"You and Nick have been spending a lot of time together lately". Her eyes darted towards mine and I gulped nervously.
"Have we?" I decided to play it cool, if I pretended I didn't notice it wouldn't be a big deal.
"You have" Prudence answered before taking a sip of her tea and placing it gently back onto the saucer.
"Canoodling in the hallways in the Academy, heart stopping glances at one another, skipping classes together. It's all very Romeo and Juliet wouldn't you agree?". Prudence questioned me.
"Are you spying on me?" I asked a little shocked.
"Spying is a amateur term for our kind. Come on now Sabrina we are Witch's we can do better than spy!". Prudence laughed smacking her hand on the table like I had just told the funniest joke. Obviously she was referring to a location spell since that is the Witch's version of stalking someone on social media.
"Why do you care so much?" I asked before taking a sip of my Caramel Latte trying to calm myself.
"Because I care about Nick". I was getting it now, this was all about Nick.
"Because I care about Nick I know what a great Warlock he could be, but to fulfil his potential he needs to attend all of his classes". Prudence continued calmly.
"He does attend all of his classes". I defended him.
"A few days ago you fainted and Nick was by your side, I wouldn't call that attending all of his classes. I am surprised Warlock's are your type quite frankly". She continued.
"He was only helping me that is all". I said feeling impatient.
"You fainted, but you are immortal meaning you will never die. Nick knew this, but chose to be by your side instead of being in class...".
"Instead of being in class with you, is that what you meant Prudence?". I interrupted putting my mug down on the table, Prudence looked surprised and a little embarrassed.
"The only Romeo and Juliet thing that is going on here is you pining over someone who you can't have". I couldn't believe the words that were leaving my mouth, but they were the truth and I had to speak it.
"Sabrina, child, I had him long before your little half breed self showed up and I will have him again!" Prudence banged her fist on the table in anger causing her tea to spill over her cup.
I wasn't surprised at this revelation since I knew Nick likes to play the field.
"He won't commit to you, he is incapable of love so my advice to you would be to stay far away". Prudence continued calmly before standing up and pushing her chair behind her. She threw some money down on the table, glared at me and stormed off.
Prudence's words were replaying in my head...Nick is incapable of love. I knew the whole point of this lunch was to scare me away from Nick. I knew her intentions which were birthed from jealousy, but she had hit a nerve with me. She had confirmed my biggest fear and somehow I got the impression that she was telling the truth, that she had experienced first hand that Nick was incapable of love. Anxiety washed over me like an ice cold bucket of water.
"Are you finished?" The Waitress asked me, she looked anxiously at Prudence's side of the table where her tea had been spilled. She put the cloth down on the table to retrieve the notes.
"Here, let me help". I said picking up the cloth and wiping the table.
"Thank you". The girl smiled at me, I smiled back and it was the first time I had really looked at her. She looked the same age as me, she was fair skinned with silky smooth long black hair. Her eyes were big and blue like the ocean and she wore oversized glasses.
"Sorry about her" I apologized gesturing towards where Prudence was sitting.
"It's okay I'm used to difficult customers" She laughed light heartedly.
"I'm Sabrina" I wasn't sure why I was introducing myself, but I was short of friends and I wasn't losing anything by telling her my name.
"I'm Star" she held out her hand and I shook it.
"Star?" I asked wanting to be sure I heard her name correctly.
"Yes, my parents named me after The Star Card in The Tarot. The card like my name means a wish fulfilled". Star explained rolling her eyes like her parents were totally crazy.
"The Tarot?" I asked, I had never heard of a mortal openly discuss Tarot Cards which is mostly forbidden in the mortal world.
"Oh god you are from The Academy right?" Star asked worriedly.
"Yes I go to The Academy of Unseen Arts" I reassured her.
"Oh good because I thought you was a Mortal for a second!" Star giggled.
"I thought you was a Mortal too that's why I was surprised when you started talking about The Tarot!" I explained to her laughing along with her.
"Oh you must be new to the academy...Did no one tell you that this town is for Witch's and Warlocks only?. No mortal's allowed, Satan wants to keep this place a secret". Well I didn't know that, but I do now.
I had learned the truth and gained a friend all in one day. Whatever was coming next I was sure that I could get through it with a friend by my side.
