Brendon sat on the floor of his bedroom, his phone clutched in his hand tightly and a box of photographs scattered across the floor due to rummaging.
"So, you've known this guy for how long?" Nicole questioned from in front of him.
"Since I was in like 2nd grade." Brendon sighed.
"And were there any hard feelings before you left." She continued, picking up one of the many photographs.
"Well I don't think he was to happy when I left." Brendon sighed and threw his phone on to the bed behind him, leaning back to rest his back against it. "I didn't even say goodbye. I just left, didn't say anything to anyone."
"Okay well, didn't you say you were under a lot of pressure when you were younger?"
"It was just hard I guess, when the band was coming together and stuff. My parents never really accepted it I guess. Alec would come to the shows though, even if it was a school night and he knew his parents would have his ass if they caught him. Sometimes we'd have to sneak him in through the back." Brendon said, a smile gracing his face as he reminisced in old memories. "The guys loved him. Spencer and Jon would tease him a lot cause of how small he was or how he was younger than us, but it never bother him. They all got along really well."
Nicole sat back as she listened to Brendon talk. She enjoyed listening to him talk sometimes. They never really got time to hang out with each other, but they had so much fun when they were together.
"Has he always been into music?" Nicole asks, leaning her head against her propped up hand.
"I think so, he's always been really into music I guess. We use to play together all the time, rock out in my living room. My mom loved him, saw him as another one of her kids. She taught him how to play the piano too."
"That's really sweet." Nicole nodded along.
"Yeah. I think my mom just felt like sh had to make up for how shitty his parents were. She felt so bad for him. He lived with us when his parents weren't around, which was more often than you'd think. Was there half the time anyway."
"How old was he?" Nicole questioned, eyebrows furrowing from disbelief.
"Maybe like eight? I know he was with us for his ninth birthday, but he was kind of always around. It's not like any of us minded, he was my best friend." Brendon exclaimed. He shook his head as he formed his next sentence. "None of us really knew what was going on with his parents, like we all knew something wasn't right, but he never really talked about it."
"His parents were kind of a big deal in the music scene back then, so I think my mom just thought they were gone a lot, but I knew something was up. There was a one night, over the summer before senior year. I opened the front door and he's just bawling his eyes out."
Nicole's face falls even more. Nobody deserves a life like that, even when you don't know the extent of the situation. It's clear that the kid had it rough.
"Have you listened to their music at all?" She asked. She'd followed the band for awhile, so she had a basic grasp of how powerful their lyrics could be, but she wasn't sure if Brendon had heard any of it.
"Kind of, I've heard bits of songs on the radio, but I've never really paid attention to what they're saying."
"Okay, here's what we're gonna do" Nicole exclaims with an exhale. "You've got some homework to do before you even consider reaching out to him."
