Chapter 21

“Uh oh.” Austin’s eyes were scrutinizing up ahead. “I think we’re at the end.”

Katie and Ariel, who had been conversing about different types of trees for the past fifteen minutes, looked up.

The river was indeed coming to an end. Ariel knew they were exactly 18 and a half yards away from shore. But how did she know that?

“Get ready.” Katie warned, slinging her backpack over her shoulder.

    Thunk!

The boat did not hit the shore smoothly. Ariel’s right shoulder slammed against the side of the boat. Katie and Austin jumped out of the canoe gracefully, Ariel lumbering after them.

“Lovely change in scenery.” Austin exclaimed in a charismatic way.

Ariel looked around. There wasn’t anything different about the woods.

“That was quick.” Katie frowned. “Quicker than I expected. Where are we?”

    “West Virginia.” Ariel replied immediately.

Austin groaned. “We’re nowhere near Chicago.”

Katie turned to Ariel, surprised. “How do you know that?”

    “I—” Ariel paused. “I don’t know.”

The other two continued to stare at Ariel, making her feel uncomfortable. She couldn’t explain it. She just knew where they were, with absolute certainty.

“What do we do with the boat?” She asked.

“We could bring it with us…oh, come on.” Katie protested to Austin’s incredulous expression. “We can’t leave it here. People will know where we went.”

“And leaving a three foot wide trail wouldn't do that?” Austin combated.

They were both right. Ariel looked at the boat, thinking hard. This was your quest. You’re supposed to know what to do. Come up with a solution!

“Put it back in the water.” Ariel said. Katie and Austin stopped arguing to look at her. “It came from the water. That’s where it’ll go back.”

“But someone will see it.” Katie pointed out.

“Ariel shook her head. “It won’t matter. They will smell us before they see us.” She didn’t want to say the word monsters.

Austin blinked. “I didn’t think of that.”

Suddenly, Ariel gasped. She fell to the floor, her brain nearly exploding.

    Danger!

“Ariel!” Katie and Austin yelled simultaneously.

    “There’s someone coming.” Ariel panted.

    “What?”

“Someone’s coming.” Ariel pointed to a path in the woods, towards her right. “From that direction.”

Katie looked up. Austin took his bow out and took aim.

“I don’t see anyone.” Katie said.

“Not yet.” Ariel could visualize the intruder, which seriously freaked her out. “In five minutes. A creature. A monster.”

“Ariel, there’s no one there.” Austin echoed Katie, who knelt by Ariel’s side.
