I got in a solid hour and a half lift before we had to be changed and meet in the team room for our weekly Monday meeting before practices started for the week.
Coach Brooks was in his second year at the helm of the ship that was our football team. He had accepted our team at our worst on multiple occasions and most importantly he accepted and appreciated me for my talent — ignoring the fact that I was a girl which of course I ate up.
"Ok, ok, everyone settle down and find a seat!" He yelled over the mumbling that was 30 or so teenage boys. "Ok everyone, thank you for quickly finding seats. Before we get too deep into play discussion and film break down, I'd like to make a quick announcement."
The room was silent as Coach motions towards the door and in walked another student. He was about 6'3" with blond hair and piercing blue eyes. He wasn't a skinny tall but instead an athletic tall with muscles that could be seen easily. I watched in awe as this guy walked across the room to meet Coach Brooks in the middle. This guy looks familiar, I thought as Coach put an arm around him, beaming.
"Everyone, I'd like you to meet Luke Faulk, a five-star transfer quarterback from Oaks Christian. Your newest teammate," Coach Brooks could hardly keep the smile off his face.
I could suddenly feel all of the color disappear from my face. I knew this guy looked familiar because I had seen him before. On the home page of every big time football website on the internet, on nearly every tweet I had ever scrolled through. This guy was the real deal, like starting quarterback of a Top 25 college football team, real deal. He had full ride offers from Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State, and that was only naming a few.
I thought dealing with jerks of doubters was a test, I thought dealing with a bad injury was a test and I was definitely wrong.
The true test had just arrived.
