Several weeks of practice went by without another incident involving Luke. He was as cocky and as rude as ever, but I was quickly learning to just completely ignore him.
Our competition for the starting spot was beginning to get more and more intense as the season crept closer. I was obviously the one that had been in control of this team for two years now but I would be the first to admit that Luke was a good quarterback and was putting up a pretty good case for starter. But I was better.
"Ok, kid," Coach began as I approached him. He held up the binder so I could see it clearly. "We wanna go here," he used his pen to indicate the designated receiver for the play.
This drill had been our staple to end practice the past few weeks. It was helping coaches decide which quarterback was the best in game like situations.
"You got it," I trotted back to the huddle and relayed the play to the team. A freshman wide receiver was supposed to be my go to for this play but as soon as I told him that, I could see his eyes shift with nerves.
I broke the huddle and the freshman, Todd, grabbed my arm and held me back for a second.
"What's my route?" He mumbled, clearly uncomfortable and not confident at all.
"Seriously?" I pressed, irritated that he couldn't remember the play. "You're number one for this play."
"Well I don't know," he sneered.
"Line up," I snapped, running up to get under center.
I scanned the defense in front of me, pointing out holes and those who needed extra coverage to my line. Then I saw who was covering Todd, it was the best corner on our defense.
I quickly yelled out an audible, knowing the play would be worthless if the ball had to go to Todd.
With a second left on the play clock, I got a clean snap, dropped back and put the ball into the hands of my wide open tight end who had broken free up the middle.
I was walking off the field as he trotted, untouched, into the end zone.
