Luke was up next. The praise I got from the sideline after my successful play didn't seem to faze him as he jogged onto the field.
He had been given a play that I knew and could get a completion in my sleep. I knew exactly who'd be open before I even saw the defense.
He took position under center and then quickly stood up, pointing at linebackers that wouldn't have any effect on the routes. That's when I realized that he had no idea. He didn't know what the defense was and was pointing out defensive players that were worthless.
The ball was snapped and he dropped back. A corner came full assault off the edge in a blitz, easily getting past the slow offensive linemen. Luke began to panic as he saw the back and began to sprint backwards. He wasn't fast or agile enough and was quickly tripped at the ankles, losing an entire 15 yards.
Whistles blew and Luke came running off the field, head hanging low.
I tapped my hand on his helmet in an encouraging way. "Hey bud, our end zone is the opposite way," I said with a wink.
