"I hope you like a little competition," Luke winked at me as we stretched and warmed up for practice the next day.
This was irritating me. A lot.
"I don't see any competition, but you're right, it would be nice to have some," I shrugged and winked back.
"Ouch," a lineman snickered behind me.
Luke looked irritated.
"Are you serious? Look at me."
"I have eyes stupid. You are nothing to me. This is my team and it's gonna stay that way," I jeered back.
"Oh I see and what are you ranked?" He smirked.
Now this was personal. I didn't have a ranking despite being a junior. In high school sports, your ranking as a player really started to matter and started to be noticed more once you reached your junior year. And I didn't have one, it was the last obstacle of being a girl football player that I was dealing with.
"You know why I don't have one."
"Because you suck. You're a girl, you aren't worth anything in this sport, that's why you don't have a ranking."
I could literally feel my blood begin to boil. I could feel my cheeks get really, really warm. I furrowed my eyebrows. Despite wearing my helmet, Luke saw this and smiled, crossing his arms.
We weren't wearing pads today, just helmets. But this didn't stop me.
I took a step forward and then quickly shoved my helmet into Luke's gutt, wrapping my hands around his waist and tackling him. I put all of my weight into the drop and could hear him groan as soon as we hit the ground.
Next thing I know, the team is surrounding us and Coach was pulling me off of Luke.
