The door was... a door alright, but it had no handles. I'd just arrived at door 300 after clearing my name with the upperclassman who'd been assigned to check on us. It was strange how she'd found my name on there almost instantly like it was the first name on the list or highlighted bold. But today was a long day leading up into the night and, I needed rest. Giving up on trying to figure out the door, I pressed my right palm on it and immediately, I slipped through it as if there was no door there at all. I gasped as I nearly slipped and fell.

The room I'd popped into was large. Larger than my own back at home, but it had no tables or lamps or bedroom material so I assumed that this was the common room for the people who shared this part of the building and, to say it was magical, wouldn't be giving it justice. Just like those in the rest of the building, the ceiling was outer space rather than wood or brick. On the four work tables, were clip on lamps of mystical purple or blue lights. At the center neighbored by an arched sofa was a coffee table that hovered around a foot above ground. Atop it was a vase of otherworldly flowers that glowed a little and had little specs of light coming out of them. Like a dream too good to be true, the room was unimaginable.

"Oh, I guess you're my roomie!" A voice called. Turning, I met with a blonde boy. He was about my height and my age, I assumed from the way he looked - dressed in a white t shirt tucked neatly into navy denim jeans and a blazer on top, he looked like a more casual version of one of the professors at campus. Unlike me however, he looked athletic and lithe like an acrobat.

Smiling shyly, he turned a little red by the ears and walked over, handing me a sheet with a bunch if writing on it. "Sorry, I may've read it in my time here. But hey, look -" he said pointing to the 9 am time slot "- we have attunement placement at the same block. We're with professor Nadin," he smiled, turning a little red as his head brushed with mine. "I'm uh, Ethan by the way," he added rubbing the back of his head. Smiling at him, making sure he didn't melt away just by talking to me "Jake. Jake Wexler," I replied as he motioned for the sofa. He patted the spot next to him ushering me to sit next to him.

"So, what attunement do you think you're going to get?" Making my heart skip a beat, he asked. "I don't actually know..." nervously, I told him. "Oh?" He gasped. "Yeah I don't wanna jinx it," I lied. I'd already told one person about me not knowing magic at all, god knows the trouble that would've sourced from having more know about it. "I can respect that," he said and we continued small talk like that for the rest of the night until we decided to call it quits for one day. One very long day.

Morning came too quickly for my tired mind to handle. And along with it, came the sadness sourced from being away from my dad and Todrick. Did the school inform them at least? I wondered as I sat up in my bed. How long till it becomes serious? How long till I see them again? The more I thought about it, the more the stress grew and accompanying it, came the main question of the day: what the hell am I going to do today? Along with a group of thirty other students and Ethan - who I found an ever-adorable blushing mess - I will be taking an attunement placement which was supposed to be this short test you take that tells you what you are attuned to best.

From last night's conversations with Ethan, I learned that an attunement was how they referred to a person's main source of magic - the one(sometimes more), out of the fourteen elements that one was born to control. Ethan was positive he'd get lightning as he once caused a thunderstorm from a tantrum he'd thrown when he was younger. Unlike Omar, Ethan seemed the person to start deep conversations and he'd only start said conversations with people he knew or wanted to know. This was a trait we shared in common. My philosophy: why have many friends when you can have one best friend? So we got along well last night.

In the common room (at least, I decided to call it that) I met with Ethan who was wearing his clothes from yesterday reading a fat cobalt book. "Morning!" I told him. "Morning! You seem nervous. Are you okay?" Taking me by surprise, he looked at me and asked before gathering his stuff and putting it in his bag. "Yeah, I'm fine. Just, a bit worried about what attunement I'd get," I covered and he nodded in understanding. "Yeah, I get what you mean. I'm pretty nervous too -like, what if I don't get lightning attuned? I'd be very disappointed if I did," he said as I saw him visibly tense up.

He was trying to be brave and I found it sweet. "Hey, why don't we head to Dammom square? It'll help us both to take a little break from all this test stress and I could show you to this one shop my family goes to every year. It's really very nice!" he said before blushing furiously "I mean of course, that is, if you want to," tongue-tied, he added and I laughed at his shyness. "Sure. But aren't we forbidden from leaving campus? "

"We are, but, there are a few select places we can go to -" he began as he started towards a deep blue door with an expensive-looking door golden handle encrusted with diamonds that glimmered in the sun's morning sunlight. He pressed it down once, twice, thrice " -and ,favorite is Dammom square!" He declared as he swung the door open. Instead of another room, a hallway or even building, the door opened into the middle of a massive market area. If Apherhand had variety, this place knocked it out of the park. Amongst the people, there were trolls, gnomes, chimera, and so many more.

Ethan took a deep breath, seeming truly in his element as he strode out into the street, beckoning me to follow. "It's the busiest market area to ever exist in all of magical history. At any one moment, there are at least 600 people here and 100 other creatures. Also, it's where you get anything you want anytime, anyhow," he stated, taking in another breathe in. "Okay, there's this shop. Follow me,"

Called Ulio's, the petit shop was a massive horde of absolutely everything. From intricate jewelry to beans in a jar - even pets. It reminded me so much of Junk stores back at home. The nostalgia only built up when I noticed how much it reminded me of the attic back at my house and how disorganized it was. But, at that point, I'd decided to not think about what I'd left behind. Because there was something much worse ahead: the attunement placement test.

I was pulled back into reality when I heard a mouse like squeal fill the entire room as a girl with skin as pale as bleached cloth ran up to Ethan and hugged him tight. Just like miss Auritel, she had the long curly hair, the antlers and the sweet and beautiful face. "Oh how pleased I am to meet you Ethan! The wind told me of your coming but I had only so much time to prepare. I also see you brought with you a friend!" She perked as she looked at me her hair turning a bright yellow color.

"I'm Auria. And from your expression, I can tell you haven't quite seen a Bruikshanfenka before - have you?" She beamed and I tilted my head in confusion making her chuckle lightly. "I'm Jake. I've met one at Apherhand but I didn't know that you're called..." I trailed off and she giggled further, the flowers on her antlers blooming in excitement "Bruikshanfenka. We're creatures born of nature - one of the four descendants of the ancient world magic. Fortunately, we are the only ones with actual generosity. There's a lot of us around and about. You'll see more in the woods - that's where we settle!" She smiled and turned to Ethan "you're friend is quite charming don't you think Ethan?" She questioned and Ethan's face went ablaze with red. "I quite liked talking to hi -" before she could finish, her hair went solid black that trickled venously along her face and down her arms as her skin turned an icy color.

Before I could even ask Ethan what was happening, the vibration in me rose sharply into a furious tremor - though I wasn't shaking, I could feel it everywhere. It was overwhelming and felt so good as it ran through my blood to the very tips of my fingers. But it was angry. Ethan rushed to my side "Jake are you okay?!" Worried, he asked. Cutting me to my answer, a sharp wind tore through the entire room sending red haze everywhere. That's when the humming grew uncontrollable.
