I kept hearing their laughter and it made want to puke. Anna was giving us a ride to the Phoenix agency which was a kind gesture for others but for me, it made me hate her. Maybe hate is a strong word, dislike is better. I don't know why I just didn't seem to trust her.
We could have gone with other agents but Jungkook insisted we go with her.
Everything about her seemed off, her being the lady at the mall, then being the twin sister of Ethan and being a Ranger and finally being Jungkook's childhood friend. Was this all a coincidence?"So Lilian, how long have you been in the agency for?" Anna asks trying to make a conversation with me. "14 years," I said. I really wasn't in a mood to talk, especially with her. "Oh so you spent most of your life there," Anna says while nodding. "How long has it been since you've been in the field?" She asks. "3 years" I replied plainly.
"Nice. You aren't that talkative. Though I heard you never stop talking." She says, looking at me through the rear view mirror. "I am talkative around certain people," I say while looking back at her. "You aren't still suspicious about me right?" She asks. "I have yet to decide that" I reply, focusing my attention to the bright city lights passing by.
"Lilian how can you not trust her. She's one of you" Jungkook jumps in defending his friend. "I'll decide who to trust. If she's one of us...." I pause and continue "I'll trust her."
"Of course, you should take your time deciding that. I didn't expect any less from the future golden phoenix." Ethan winks at me making the sudden heat in the car settle to a comfortable temperature. I smile at him, I could give a thousand reasons why I won't be a golden phoenix but my brain refused to let me think further. My brain just needs a little break that's all."Why are we in the city?" Tommy asked. I was confused as well, this question did surface up to my brain but sleep made me forget about it. Majority of the headquarters are outside of city limits. Having them close by means danger for the city folks and the agency as well. "I know what you are thinking. It was a plainly idiotic decision to have the headquarters built underneath the city" Anna answers.
"UNDERNEATH?!" My team and I exclaimed. I was absolutely amazed. I've never heard of Phoenix headquarters underground. Anna only nods as she turns right, into the back alley. She stopped behind what looks like a bookstore. "Alright! We are here." Anna says after parking the car. We all step out, utterly confused as to where the agency was.
"Oh god! What's this smell?!" Eric asks while covering his nose and mouth. Suddenly the smell of decomposed food hits my nose. Not only that, the smell of sewers was present too. We all stare at the sewer and then at each other as if we were thinking the same thing. "Please tell me your headquarters are not in the sewers," Tony asks, already feeling the need to vomit.
Anna smiles and shakes her head saying "no". Anna walks to the back door of the book store and unlocks it. We all enter the store, trailing behind her in the dark."Ow! James, you stepped on my foot!" Tony yells. "I didn't, I swear." James defends himself.
"It's pitch black in here, you can't even see your own hands, so how do you know it's James that stepped on your foot?" I ask Tony. "I felt a heavy weight on my foot. I assumed it was James." Tony replies. "What is that supposed to mean?" James asked. "He means that you are fat!" Eric answers him. "Shut up Eric. Don't be rude." Helen backs up James. "Tony has a good point. James weighs more than all of us here" Tommy speaks up. "You know that still doesn't make any sense. Tony's feet aren't a weighing scale guys. There's no way you would know if James stepped on his foot." Megan joins and I imagine her rolling her eyes while her hands are placed on her hip in annoyance.
I just listen to them bicker and hold in my laughter because the one who stepped on Tony's foot was me. Even though it was funny, I was still kind of mad that Tony thought I'm fat because I weighed a lot. I knew I should have worked out.
"Do you all usually just bicker like donkeys?" Anna asks. "Donkeys don't bicker" I reply. "The ones in this book store do" I hear Jungkook's voice and then a sound of high five and laughter follows. Rude.
I ignore the heat rising up my neck and to my ears because of embarrassment and anger. Thankfully Ethan speaks up, saving me once again from saying anything. "Anna, I believe we are late. It's better to stop fooling around and take our guests to the headquarters."
"Very well. I was enjoying this but we are on a schedule." She replies and flicks on the switch. White light floods the book store making me shut my eyes. Slowly, I open my eyes and let them adjust to my surroundings. The book store was smaller than expected. Dark brown shelves packed with old, dusty books were lined all around us.
"This way," Anna says. We follow her into a room which said: "Staff only". She leads us to an empty storage room which would barely fit four people. She enters the storage room while the rest of us stay outside. There was a single lightbulb in the room which had a string attached to it to switch it on. Anna pulls the string 5 times and each time she pulled the string she said something. "Protect the innocent," the first pull. "Catch the guilty" second pull. " Follow the laws and rules" third pull. "Never make a promise you can't keep, never break a promise either" forth pull. "Remember, your life always before the others" the fifth and last pull shook the ground.
The wall in front of us divided into two. The wall slid open into a large elevator, mirrors on all the 3 walls of the box of death. My experience with elevators was not fun, once I got stuck in one. After that elevators are a death trap for me but of course I have to seem tough, I am no coward, yeah right! My brain just loves to go against me.
"You coming Golden Phoenix?" Anna says the last two words a bit angrily. My team and BTS had already made their way to the elevator. I step in, standing beside Tommy who lightly bumps his shoulder against mine. "Back straight Leader" He whispers. I fix my slumping position and straighten up as the elevator doors shut and begin to move down.
I notice Tommy smile in satisfaction, "That's better. You should have been more careful in the store Lils" He whispers. I snap my head towards him "What?" I ask him even though I knew what he meant. "You need to lose some weight, my friend," He says smiling smugly. I slap his arm and he started laughing. I chuckle as well but stop when I feel someone staring at me. I turn my head to my left and notice Jungkook angrily staring back. What's his problem? I look back at him with the same intensity.
I noticed Anna link her arm with his. That action made me clench my fist in anger. Calm the fudge down you idiot. I thank my brain for such nice words. "Don't let her get to you, leader," Tommy whispers to me and pats my back. "I won't" I reply and look back at Jungkook who was still staring at me. Before I looked away from him, I mouth the words "ASSHOLE" His eyes widen in shock and I give him an innocent smile.
The elevator comes to a stop and the door opens revealing a portrait of the original Golden Phoenix, our founder. "SALUTE" I shout and salute and the rest follow suit. Heart hard as stone, don't let them get to you, hide your feelings, I repeated these words. I won't let her get to me, I won't let anyone.
