I stared at the note for what felt like hours.
"Ashlyn?" Carson said, snapping me out of my daze.
I looked up at him and everyone one else was either whispering amongst each other or looking at the basket.
"What do we do?" Nathan asked.
"First of all, get that basket as far away from here as possible." I said, fiddling with my blade between my fingers and pacing on the other end of the kitchen.
"Why?" Nathan asked.
I spun around and threw my knife at one of the cupcakes, and everyone jumped. It split the cupcake in half perfectly, and inside, barely visible, but still there, was a tiny grey, circle-ish tracker.
"Did they really think we would be as stupid to eat them?" Joe said, picking up the tracker and examining it. He tossed it to Rianna, and she turned it over in her fingers, examining it.
"So what do we do?" Nathan asked again.
I hesitated before I threw my bow back over my shoulder. "What do you mean? We're going to go out and find these bastards." I said, walking briskly toward the elevator.
"Whoa, whoa, whoa there." Joe said, stepping in front of me with his hand out. "We can't just ignore this."
"I am not, Joseph, I am going out and doing something about it." I said glaring up at him as my blood was starting to heat up.
"Ok miss hot head." He sneered, and I death glared. "Before you go out all fucking huffy, we need to warn Captain or something so he can keep everyone safe. We have more then just the seven of us to worry about. I'm angry too, but just calm your shit."
I took a few deep breaths, hating that he was right. I ran a hand over my face. "Ok Rianna, ring up the Captain and tell him. Then deactivate that thing and dissect the shit out of it." I said pointing to her.
She nodded and left the room, and I sat in a chair, holding my head.
"Ok we should devise a plan then." Nathan said. "Wait Ashlyn what were we gonna do?"
"I need to track the main source of the radiation and that should be our base. I'll use my radioactive detection mode and have you and Joe stay with me so I can get around faster. It's gonna be a slow process but it's all I've got at this point." I said.
"Ok, what about the rest of us?" Carson asked.
"You guys just hop roofs and keep a lookout for anything suspicious, but keep close to us. We might need you."
"I've informed the Captain." Rianna said, strolling back in.
"Ok, we're leaving. Rianna your working comps?" I said, slinging my bow over my shoulder and walking briskly to the elevator.
"Got it." She replied, disappearing down the hall to the control room.
"We've been searching for hours and we haven't found shit except bird shit." Nathan said irritably, kicking a pigeon.
"Don't kick birds, dude. It's a dick move." Joe said punching his shoulder.
"That's coming from Joe, Nathan." I said.
"True story." Joe said, pointing to me and looking at Nathan.
"Ok but Nathan's right. We've been searching aimlessly and I feel like we've gotten nothing done. We need to try something different." I said turning around to face them, and they both jumped.
I rolled my eyes. "You guys have to get used to the eyes."
"How many different modes do you even have?"
"I don't know I think nine or something. Rianna and the Captain said there's probably more that I just haven't discovered, but that doesn't make any sense." I said scanning the area slowly as to not miss anything.
"Why doesn't it—"
"Wait shut up." I shushed them, running closer to the ledge of the roof.
"She's kinda bitchy." Joe muttered to Nathan.
"You want me to flip you off this roof because I will." I said, kicking my leg back to kick his shin, smirking when I heard him grunt.
"I have a reading...it's faint but it's over there." I said pointing off into the distance.
Nathan and Joe put their hands on my shoulders and transported us to the roof I pointed to.
I looked around to try and find the trace, and I looked down an alley way to see a man walking through it.
I tapped my earpiece. "Come in team. I think I might've found our guy." I whispered.
"Smart. Whisper so the guy 400 feet that way can't hear you." Nathan whispered sarcastically.
"You both never shut up. I wish Carson had teleportation powers, he's cooler then you both."
They both started arguing behind me and I focused back to the guy. He was carrying a brief case and he was wearing a black suit with a dark, maroon tie.
Just then, Carson and Sophia landed on the roof and jogged over to us.
"Are we just gonna take him down?" Sophia asked. "Or is there some kind of dumbass plan."
"Well what if he explodes?" Carson asked.
"That's a dumbass question." Sophia said and Carson glared.
"Can't believe I'm saying this but Carson's right. We weren't expecting the explosion last time and look at how that turned out. We barely know what these people are capable of and we have to be cautious." I said.
Everyone agreed and we jumped onto the next roof over. The one right above the alley the man was in.
We came up with a plan, and so I took my bow and aimed it right at his legs. I took the shot, and the arrow split into a vise like rope. It wrapped itself around the mans legs and we heard his screams of shock.
I pressed a button on my belt and the rope tightened and he was yanked off of his feet, being pulled upside down, upscaling the side of the roof. Kind of like a tape measure.
I stopped it when he was about five feet from the top, just where he could hear us.
He was screaming at the top of his lungs, dangling upside down.
"Shut up." Nathan growled.
"WHO THE HELL ARE YOU?! GET ME DOWN!" The man shouted, trying to keep his voice even and commanding, but just coming out terrified.
"You don't need to know who we are. But we need to know who you are." I said, flipping my hood on and turning on my voice changer, making my voice not deeper, but still different.
"ARE YOU INSANE?! YOU'RE GONNA KILL ME! THE ARE ROPES GONNA BREAK, GET ME—"
"The faster you answer our questions, the faster we'll get you down." Sophia said, filing her nails. I looked at her and suppressed a laugh.
The guy let out a small whimper, and we took that as a yes.
"Tell us your name, and where you were going." Carson said.
"M-my name is K-kyle Sharon. I was just going to m-meet my g-girlfriend for lunch." He said shakily.
"Do you think we're stupid? YOU WOULDNT BE THE FIRST PERSON WEVE KILLED AND YOU WONT BE THE LAST UNLESS YOU TELL US THE DAMN TRUTH YOU SICK BASTARD!" Joe yelled with his voice changer, that did have a deep voice. We each had interrogation mode in our suits, which was basically a voice modifier.
After more tears from the wuss and more yelling, we finally got him to talk.
He was one of the scientists that worked at società di cielo rosso. His name was Dr. Caden Roque, and he was doing a delivery to one of the agents at SDI Force.
"What's in the briefcase?" I sneered.
"What brief case..." he sobbed hopelessly. Gosh this guy was such a baby.
I clicked a button on my belt and Caden dropped about 10 feet, until I stopped the rope suddenly and brought him back up, him wailing like a girl.
"Okay, okay! It's...it's Polonium...Polonium is a radioacti—"
"Don't talk to me like I'm stupid. I know more then you do, you bag of shit." I snarled.
We asked more questions and he caved faster then Carson giving up dieting. His end of the job was simply acquiring the materials, delivering it to one of the handlers from SDI. He didn't know the boss of SDI, but we now had his bosses name and the location of Red Sky Corporations bases. He pretty much exposed everyone he worked for. I'm glad they sent such a softie to do deliveries.
"Ok Dr. Roque, do you have a family?" I asked, pulling some money and papers out of my pockets.
"Y-yes...a wife...two d-daughters...oh God, p-please don't hurt them..." he cried.
"We're the good guys, dumbass." Nathan said, rolling his eyes. Probably not from this guys perspective, given he was hanging off the side a building.
"Your family is going to need to lay low. Move away. Keep your head low. Quit that worthless excuse of a job. You should be ashamed of yourself." I said. He closed his eyes and a few more tears fell. I looked to Sophia and nodded. Sophia nodded and she blew softly into her hand, and a small, lavender purple mist swirled around in her hand. She kneeled down and blew it into his face gently, and he was out cold.
I pulled him up to the roof, tucked the envelope in his coat, grabbed the briefcase, and we left.
"Woo-hoo! I can't believe we've got a lead!" Nathan yelled, fist pumping into the air as we walked out of the elevator into our headquarters.
I laughed. "We're not even close to done my friend." I said.
"Fuck you, I'm getting the champagne." Joe called over his shoulder as he jogged to the kitchen. I smiled and shook my head, following everyone to the kitchen. We all sat around the island, and Alysa and Rianna soon appeared in the doorway.
"Hey! We got a lead!" Sophia announced to Alysa and Rianna cheerfully, doing jazz hands and grinning.
"Yeah we heard. You, Joe, and Nathan are real assholes when your interrogating." Rianna laughed, turning to me. I laughed as Joe handed me a flute glass and poured some golden, bubbling champagne into it.
"Bet these people we scare the shit out of would be shocked to see how delightful we are." Nathan said sarcastically charming.
We laughed and held our glasses up.
"To the seven delightful assholes!" Carson toasted, and we shouted the same in unison and clinked our glasses together, laughing.
