I woke up the next day between Sophia and Joe. I sat up and cursed. I was supposed to be keeping watch.
I stood up quickly and checked my watch. 5:46 a.m. Okay, I only fell asleep for an hour.
I yawned and threw my bow back over my shoulder, dragging my feet to the door of the barn. I cracked the door open and a sliver of a chilling breeze made goosebumps run up my arms. I opened it more and slipped outside to do a perimeter check. It was so dark it looked like midnight, the wind was howling aggressively, and flakes of snow pelted my face. Blizzard season in Russia was miserable. Of all the places we could've teleported, Joe got shot into Russia.
In the forest to my right, I heard a twig snap and I drew an arrow as my head snapped in that direction, immediately awake and alert. Something in the snow caught my eye and I squinted. Footprints...and more were appearing. Straight towards me.
I blinked my eyes and I was in visibility mode, so I could see anyone or anything invisible. My irises shone pure white and and I spotted the persons figure.
I drew my arrow all the way back and tightened my grip "Don't move!" I shouted.
Suddenly, like dust, the figure disappeared in the wind.
"What the—"
I was cut off when a ice cold chill ripped straight through me, and I fell to the ground, gasping for breath, as darkness slowly overpowered me.*Riannas POV*
"Do you think we should get a dog?" I asked, biting down on a piece of toast. It was the next morning and me and Alysa were, like usual, together in the control room, doing everything we could to get a team out to Russia. Even our base in Moscow refused to send a rescue team because it was too risky. Not to mention Moscow was literally on the other side of Russia from Magadan. So every option we tried, failed us, and took us back to square one.
She looked at me tiredly. "What?"
"A dog. A team dog. I think we should get one." I said.
She scoffed and shook her head, looking back down at her keyboard.
"I'm serious! We're always bored when we're here alone, and a dog would be so cool to have around." I said, kicking my feet up on the table with the computer.
"Maybe we can talk about this later." She said, raising her eyebrows.
I shrugged and tossed my empty plate onto the table. I knew she was right. I hated that.
"What's happening in Russia?" I asked.
Alysa sighed and ran a hand over her hair. "The blizzards only getting worse...Captain's not authorizing us to take any action. Our Moscow base have about seven sticks up their asses, because they aren't even considering send a search team out. I'm trying everything. Nathan's thrown a hissy fit and is hiding in his room. Carson's just at the track downstairs. He's been running nonstop for almost 24 hours. Everything's falling apart. These people tore us apart without lifting a finger." She said miserably.
I sighed and remained silent for a few moments. "Can you feel whatever they're feeling?" I asked.
She shrugged. "Every once in a while I feel something. Then it goes away just as soon as it came. Like a candle blowing out. Just like that." She said, snapping her fingers.
Suddenly, the double doors to the computer room slammed open. Me and Alysa flinched and looked up, as Nathan and Carson strode in briskly side by side.
"We're going to Russia." Nathan announced, stopping right in front of us.
"Excuse me?" I said, taken aback.
"We're going. I don't care what Captain, or the weather, or the pilots are saying. We're going whether you come or not." Nathan said shortly.
"You can't, Nathan." Alysa said with a soft exhaustion.
"I don't care! Those are my friends. Joe is up there, dying! He's my best friend, I can't lose..." He broke off, his voice becoming thick. He cleared his throat, and a mask of determination covered his face. "I have to. We have to. So come with us."
"Nathan, I don't—" Alysa stopped short and her pupils dilated to the size of quarters. She fell off her chair to her knees, gasping for breath, a mask of terror on her face. I jumped out of my chair and ran to her, kneeling in front of her.
"Alysa?!" I shouted, grabbing her face and forcing her to look at me. Something cleared in her eyes and her body relaxed. Her eyes fell shut, and she went limp in my arms.
"Alysa? Carson, give me that water!" I ordered him. He rushed to the table and brought the water to me.
"What's wrong with her?" Carson asked, confused.
"I didn't like...give her a heart attack or something right?" Nathan asked stupidly. I rolled my eyes.
"Don't flatter yourself." I said. I lightly patted her face with cool water, and her eyelids began to flutter open.
"Hey there, Dr. Hotpockets." I said.
She grinned weakly and sat up. "Well I've never felt that before..." She mused.
"What happened?" Carson asked once again.
"I think...Ashlyn's in trouble now. We've got two problems on our hands." She said, burying her head in her hands.
The room was silent for a few minutes, the air somber before Carson spoke up.
"We're leaving in ten minutes at the roof. Be there or don't." And with that he strode out of the room.
