KATHERINE'S P.O.V.

The next day in school, Britney came up to me.

"I warned you to stay away from Peter."

"Not now, Britney. Just..."

"I'm afraid I'm not done yet." she interrupted.

I rolled my eyes.

"So you're with him now, huh?"

"How did you come to know?" I asked lazily.

"Oh, everyone knows. It is Peter Anderson we're talking about. Girls are crazy for him."

Just then, Jules came by my side.

"The last time I saw you, I was gonna punch you in the face. Maybe we get to continue from there?"Jules muttered.

I did not want to make a scene in the corridor so I pulled Jules away from Britney and we walked away from her.

"God! She's crazy." I said.

"You should've let me punch her. Maybe that would have knocked a little sense into her tiny good-for-nothing brain."

"Then you'd get in trouble, Ms. Rebel. The best thing we can do is ignore her."

"Yeah, you're probably right. Let's just change the topic."

"Now that you've  said that, prom is coming up this weekend."

"Oh, yes! Prom!" she danced.

I giggled.

"You should ask Kent out." I could see her blushing already.

"But... What if he's already going with someone else?"

"Oh, Jules. Are you kidding me? We both know that he has a crush on you. I'm sure he'd say yes."

"Okay, maybe you're right. But today is Thursday and prom is on Saturday. So I'll have to ask him out soon."

"What about today? After school?"

"God, I'm nervous."

"Don't be. It'll be fine. He's going to say yes."

"I hope so." she sighed.

After school, Jules asked Kent out. And as expected, he said yes. But the whole process was hilarious. Jules was too nervous to be alone, so she asked me to hide somewhere close and help her. Kent was blushing. Jules was blank. She tried to speak, but stammered. At last, Kent lost his patience.

"Shh. Stop trying." he chuckled. "Yes, I'll be your date to the prom." he smiled.

"Really?" she jumped.

"Yes, I'd love to."

Jules was super happy about it.

'Now we both have hot dates!' she said and I quote.

Kevin was happy to be alone. According to him, he wasn't the 'boyfriend type'. I was happy for him because he was fine with being single and that's a different bliss.

After reaching home from school, I called Britney.

"Hi." I said, unsure.

"Who's this?"

"It's Katherine, from school."

"Oh, god. I have better things to do. Stop wasting my time. Do me a favour and hang up."

"Hey, listen! It's just you and me. It's not like someone is listening to this conversation and I'm obviously not recording it. You don't have anyone to impress with your attitude right now. So why don't you stop being a brat and get real for a second?"

She didn't utter a word.I sighed and continued.

"Britney, why do you hate me so much? I've never done anything to you. Every time, I try to think of a reason for you to hate me, I come up with nothing. It is then I realise that you've been trying to make my life hell for no good reason. And it bugs me so much. So just tell me, what's the deal?"

Still nothing. Wow, I gave her a whole speech and she had nothing to say to me? I was getting frustrated.

"Maybe this was a bad idea." I murmured under my breath.

I was about to hang up, when Britney finally spoke.

"Katherine, wait!"

"Huh?"

"I'm sorry. I'm sorry for being a bitch to you. It's just that... I..."

"It's okay. You can tell me."

"I try so hard to be the best. And yet, people think of me as a pretty, but dumb girl. But look at you, you ace everything without even trying. You've got great friends, you're good at academics and everyone loves you. Tell me, how can I top that?"

"Oh, Britney. I'm sorry. I had no idea you felt that way. The truth is, you're far from dumb. You're smart and everyone knows that. If you could just stop... um..."

"Being a bitch?" she laughed. "It's okay, you can say it. I know I can be way too arrogant sometimes. I'm sorry."

"Oh, it's okay." I said.

"So what do you say? Should we forget the past and start over?"

"Definitely." I smiled.

"Good. I'll see you in school."

"Yeah, bye."

"Goodbye!"

I hung up the phone.

I was happy. It was a good feeling — not having someone who hates you and tries to sabotage everything you do.

"Kinda peaceful." I mumbled.

With my mind at peace, I realised that I had to go shopping for the prom. I was excited and looking forward to it.
