Oh would you look at me. Begin so active again it's almost as if I actually planned this out (I didn't but it's a big surprise to see me active). Anyways before I start review this masterpiece of an anime, I just want to give my general disclaimer. Believe it or not but this chapter will include spoilers (only anime spoilers). You have been warned.>.<
Just a recap of the anime. It is set in the year 2045. Emma a 11 year old girl is living in an orphanage with 37 other children. Every three- four months, a child is "adopted" by a family and has to leave the orphanage. One day when Conny was "adopted", Emma and Norman realised that she had left her favourite toy Bunny behind. Together they sneak out to give her it but they find Conny dead and the truth about the orphanage. They learned that the orphanage was a farm for demons and Isabelle (Mamma) had an alliance with the. Throughout the remainder of the show, they plan their escape with the other children (children over the age of six). Norman is lost (we love you man) and Ray manufactures a device to destroy their tracking devices. After successfully surviving several challenges (Mamma getting a second adult to help and Mamma breaking Emma's leg) they successfully reach beyond the walls.
This god damn story was beyond amazing. It was probably one of the most unique anime shows that have seen so far. It was a carbon copy of every shounen in anime, it was original and different. It was of course adapted from a manga which was amazing. They followed it so carefully not like *cough cough Tokyo Ghoul: Re cough cough*. But with great writing comes idiotic fans.
And by fans I mean manga readers. For some reason every episode I watch there was at least one comment saying "I am a manga reader and I know that next episode the blah blah blah". I was baffled at the fact that some people don't know when not to spoiler a series. Thank god I read the manga after the second episode cause I got impatient so I knew what was going to happen but for those poor fans that didn't, they always got spoilers because the "manga readers" couldn't and wouldn't shut up.
The animations were pretty nice. It had this eerie or unsettling feeling to it, especially when they were playing hide and seek with Sister. It was like a cat and mouse chase. I haven't watch any other shows by CloverWorks, so I can't compare the animations just yet. Maybe one day I'll look at Persona 5 (considering I have the game). I doubt it but we can always hope. I'll maybe watch it if its in dubbed.
The characters: The story makes it so hard to not get swiped into the lives of the characters. The most I can say is that they are likeable. Even with a character like Mamma, at the end you feel sorry for her especially if you read the manga. You find out so much more after the end of the show. The way they subtly added Phil (the little boy with blue eyes) was chilling. Phil knew about the farm and the demons but never spoke up about it. He was always put in as a background characters. If you didn't pay attention to small details like this, you would've been shocked to find out that he was the new leader (he was a child under the age of six). Phill was literally the embodiment of foreshadowing.
Now for some music 🎶. What can I say except NANANANANANANANA. I expect nothing less from UverWorld and Cö shu Nie. If you haven't listen to any of their work, all I can say is that you are missing out but I'm certain that you have. Blue Exorcist opening 1 or My Hero Academia opening 3, they are both song and performed by UverWorld. And for Cö shu Nie is Tokyo Ghoul: Re (ugh I can't believe I'm say their name) opening 1. Cö shu Nie is quite new to the anime song but she already has a name for herself. I really do recommend them both. They are truly iconic.
Conclusion: Promised Neverland was probably the best anime of that season. If the first season was this good, I certainly can't wait for next season. 2020 here we come (actually I think I can wait considering I'll be doing my Leaving Cert. Pray for me). The director, Mamuro Kanbe did an amazing job with this anime. She should be praise for her work. Some of the animes she worked on were Elfen Lied (director) and Kimi to Boku (also the director).
That's all for now. Next time I will be reviewing Ousama Game and trust me, you shouldn't watch it. Its the definition of monstrosity. See you next time <3
