Fernkit looked up, her beautiful blue eyes gleaming. "Hi, Echolight! Looks like Ravenkit has a bellyache, probably from that shrew he ate just now. I knew it was crow-food!"she squeaked. "His pain isn't that bad, so I think juniper berries would work. Anyway, juniper berries do taste really nice!" Echolight purred and dropped a juniper berry at Fernkit's paws. Fernkit, bouncing around, mewed, "Echolight! I'm turning six moons next week! Can I be your apprentice? Pleeeaaaaseee?" Echolight's eyes twinkled. "We'll see. Now get this juniper berry to your brother," she meowed in reply, waving her long tail to dismiss Fernkit. Fernkit picked up the juniper berry and rushed over the the small cave. Ravenkit hastily gobbled up the juniper berry and sat next to his sister. "We're going to be apprentices soon! Are you excited?" Ravenkit asked. Fernkit's large blue eyes glittered as she meowed. "Totally!" With that, the two kits flopped down on the ground, purring.
Meanwhile, Echolight sat in her den, sorting herbs. As she picked up a juniper berry, she remembered what Fernkit has asked her. Young Fernkit was motivated and smart, knowing every herb by heart. Echolight's tail curled >around her body. I'll mentor her. Though she'll never have a mate or kits, I know she will find it worth it. I will teach her everything I know.
