The shrill sound multiple sirens had been keeping me awake during the evening hours.

No to mention, the red and blue lights from the police cars that bled into my dark room, the sun had set not too long ago and there seemed to be some sort of a commotion brewing outside.

Slipping out of my bed, I shuffled over to my broken window and peered outside, the dimly lit streets had painted a picture, a grim one at that.

A man was weeping over the body of his dead wife, who was about to be carried away on a stretcher, the man sobbed uncontrollably, clutching a young girl, who was holding a crumbled, cardboard sign against her little chest.

I couldn't make out the words on the sign, but they must have been important.

Maybe, that's what caused all the ruckus?

My expression stayed indifferent, I was used to these kind of events, I hadn't grown up in the best of neighborhoods, there was always a fight that had broken out, some led to injury or even death.

However, something about this display seemed... off.

Smoothing my hair back, my hands jerked within the strands of my hair when I heard a loud, slow stomping from outside.

It was coming from the stairs.

I stayed motionless and silent, I was still recovering from my meltdown, I wasn't prepared for another one, let alone to face what was coming up those damn stairs.

The raspy cough that accompanied the stomping wasn't helping either.

I quickly jumped to my feet and dove under my bed, my body felt numb and cold, I was starting to tremble again.

The sirens outside were still wailing and the coughing stranger from outside wouldn't shut up.

My heart was racing, my head was throbbing, at this point I didn't care if I died under this bed, I just wanted all this madness to be over...

At this point, I had forgotten about Freddie, he could have been dead for all I knew!

From outside, the screeching of tires on the asphalt signaled that the cars were speeding away, probably to the nearest hospital, I silently shared my condolences with that grieving man.

The coughing however, would not cease, it was driving me insane.

"Go away!!" I shouted, feeling the a lump in my throat harden, it was like a ticking time bomb, I was ready to have another meltdown.

The coughing grew louder, angrier, whatever this stranger had caught sounded deadly, his stomping was horrendous too, from what I could hear, he was stumbling everywhere and making so much noise.

A drunk dumbass... I thought, desperately attempting to reassure myself.

I then heard a sharp inhale, then, complete silence.
