"I'm so glad you're back," Alaska said, wrapping her arms around me as we stood in the airport in Omaha.
Honestly, I wasn't sure if I was glad to be back or not. I had fun in the UK and I was dreading having to see Sam again, although I was planning on ignoring him as much as possible. I knew he had moved on and now had a new girlfriend, which broke my heart but I was also the one who told him to move on.
"Me too," I lied.
"You're lying," she said, calling my bluff.
"Yeah I am."
"What's wrong?" she questioned as we walked out to her car.
"I don't need to talk about it or else I'll sound like a whiny bitch," I laughed.
"Just tell me. I won't judge you."
"Yeah right. You not judging me," I scoffed.
"I promise."
I found this very disarming but I wanted someone to talk to and she was the only person I could talk to about anything anymore.
"Fine. Sam has a new girlfriend and I'm bummed about it, even though I shouldn't be."
"Do you know who it is?" she asked, her voice picking up a little, but I ignored it.
"No clue," I shook my head and climbed into her car. "Do you think they'll be at the party tonight?"
"Probably," she shrugged.

Alaska had dropped my off at my house earlier and went back to her house to get ready for the party. I got out of my car and started walking to the house the party was at. The closer I got to the house the move I felt my hands shake. I didn't think I was ready to see Sam with someone else but I knew sooner or later I was going to have to rip the bandage off. I ran my shaking hands through my hair before walking inside.
I saw Jack Gilinsky, Jack Johnson, Sam, and a few other people standing in a small group and started walking over to them.
"Hey," Jack Gilinsky said, and drapped an arm around my shoulders. "How was school abroad?"
"Better than school here," I told him.
"I bet."
"Glad you're back, Lakyn," Jack Johnson said.
"Thanks," I said, looking over at Sam with sad eyes.
"Hey!" Sam said as he wrapped his arms around a girl's waist and kissed her. I felt my stomach drop and Jack squeezed me, which I was thankful that he was still around me, or I probably would have fallen. The girl turned around and I had to grab onto Jack's hand to keep from falling this time.
It was Alaska.
"Hi," she smiled. I felt sick to my stomach. Why didn't she tell me earlier that they were dating?
"I'll be back," I said turning around and walking away quickly. I found a bottle of something and started chugging it. I felt a hand on my shoulder and I turned around, face to face with Sam.
"Hey," he said.
"Hi," I said, catching my breath.
"Didn't Alaska tell you we were dating?" he asked.
"Do you think I would be chugging a bottle of," I looked at the bottle, "apple pie liqueur?"
"Not necessarily," Sam said, taking the bottle from my hands and setting it down. "You told me to move on, and I did."
"I know. Which is why I don't deserve to feel like this, but I didn't expect it to be my best friend."
Sam looked down and nodded.
"Why Alaska?" I asked.
"I don't know. We just started talking one day and clicked," he explained.
"Now I know how Jack felt when we started dating. And it sucks," I said.
"I'm sorry. We should go back," Sam said, intertwining our arms. I grabbed my bottle and we started walking back to Jack, Jack, and Alaska.
I didn't pay much attention to what everyone was talking about, I was just trying to get drunk enought not to care, but it wasn't working.
I felt someone nudge me and I was brought out of my trance. I saw Jack standing above me and had a hand extended to me. "Come with me."
"I'm not drunk enough for that," I laughed.
"No. Just come with me," he said and I took his hand. He pulled us outside and sat down on the front step of the house. "Sit," he said, noticing the confused look on my face. I did as I was told and sat next to him.
"How did you handle this?" I asked.
"Handle what?"
"How did you handle Sam and I dating. I mean, we might not have as 'strong of a connection' as Sam and I did but didn't you feel horrible at all?"
"Yeah, definitely. I saw you two together and I wanted to punch myself in the face for letting you get away, but you were happy so I put up with it," he said. "It gets better." I leaned my head down on his shoulder and let out a deep breath. He put his hand on my back and started rubbing it up and down.
"I don't remember the last time I was drunk. But I definitely am now," I laughed.
"What are you drinking?" he asked, taking the bottle from my hands.
"Apple pie shots," I said. Jack turned his head and pressed his lips to the top of mine, leaving them there for a while and I already felt better.

Sam's P.O.V.
Maybe I had made a mistake dating Alaska. I honestly wasn't over Lakyn and I didn't know if I ever would be. The time I was with her were the best times of my life. And I definitely didn't love Alaska. I walked to the front door, needing fresh air because I was suddenly suffocating, when I saw two people sitting on the steps. At first I didn't think anything about it, but then I noticed who they were.
It was Jack and Lakyn. I felt my stomach drop, even though I wasn't supposed to care about things like this anymore. I turned around, trying to pretend what I just saw didn't happen and walked back to Alaska.
"Hey babe," she smiled.
"Hi," I said, stiffly.
"What's wrong?" she asked, concerned.
"Nothing. I'm just tired. I'm going to go," I told her.
"Okay. I'll talk to you later?" she asked as I started walking away.
"I wouldn't count on it," I muttered.
"What?" she called behind me. "Sam?!" but I was already gone.
