the following morning, steve arrived like he said he would. he had a freakishly huge grin on his face.

"oh god," sam muttered knowing something was probably not going to go well.

"nice seeing you too," he groaned.

sam laughed as he got into his red car. she was glad that what happened the night before was not making things awkward between the two of them.

steve held out a bouquet of roses for her. she raised her eyebrows as she looked at the roses in his hand.

"um, it's for you," he gulped. he was sure roses were a means of apologizing and making girls happy again after messing up. he wasn't thinking clearly when he almost kissed her. he lied to her and told her it was because of nancy, but it truly wasn't. he was unsure as to why he had felt the sudden desire to hold her.

"i'm sort of allergic," she muttered. she pulled the window down and took in deep breaths.

"oh! oh shit. i'm sorry! i didn't—" he stopped panicking once he heard her laughter. "you're not allergic are you?" he groaned.

she shook her head as she laughed.

"you don't deserve my roses," he murmured. before he could act as if he were throwing them out the window, she snatched them from him to which he smiled at.

they arrived at school and sat in his car for a bit as sam read his personal statement.

"it's shit isn't it?" he sighed and leaned back into his driver's seat.

"no! they're not shit. they just need some work is all," she looked at steve and smiled. she turned back to the papers and flipped through them. "we can have a day to work on the-" she stopped mid sentence because an extremely loud car zoomed into the parking lot.

a blue camaro raced onto the parking lot and parked in a swift motion. immediately after, a young, redheaded girl jumped out and sped off on her skateboard. sam got out of the car and rested her arms on it's doors as she watched the boy emerge.

"look at him," some girls passing by squealed.

"that's," she started.

"billy," steve groaned.

billy slammed his door shut and walked with a cigarette on his lips. he slowly removed it and puffed out smoke. his facial expression was stone cold. he took one last puff before stomping the cigarette with his boots.

"you really hadn't seen him yet?" steve questioned. it was october, so they were three months into school already.

"nope. i dont stick around much before or after school," she replied still watching him.

"well, you're lucky then."

she turned to look at steve quickly. he was already rolling his eyes, being dramatic as always.

"he doesn't seem that bad, steve. you're a drama queen," she giggled. billy had been leaning against his car, looking around until spotting steve.
