the following school day she felt as if everyone were staring at her. she bit her lip and pulled her book tightly towards her body.
she knew that the kiss had been visible to some. they had probably spread the news around school because everyone would turn to look at her as she passed by.
she arrived at her locker. there was a couple people surrounding it and snickering. she gulped and pushed passed them.
the word "slut" was written across it. she turned to look at everyone, who just laughed.
"hey." she heard a voice from behind the crowd. "hey!" he yelled loudly. everyone jumped and stared at the boy. "you have two seconds to leave before i kick all of your asses." he sounded angry; it was enough to scare even her. everyone scattered quickly. he stared at the locker and his face dropped.
sam bit her lip nervously. she could feel her tears flowing.
steve opened his arms and embraced her. "people are stupid, sammy. you have to learn to ignore them." her head was pressed against his chest. he then held her at arm's length. "i warned you to stay away from him, sam."
"so, i take it you heard?" she muttered. she wiped away the tears on her face.
steve sighed and nodded his head. he rested his head on the locker.
"are you mad?" she asked him. she felt embarrassed knowing she did something as wild as that. she had given billy her number, but he hadn't called that night or the night after.
"well, i was at first, but i shouldn't have left. i should've stayed with you. i tend to walk away from situations that piss me off or upset me. i'm sorry. it's just . . . was he telling the truth?" he turned to face sam and watched her. he waited for the answer.
"no! i hadn't done anything with him."
"but now you have," he punched a locker aggressively. sam jumped and backed away. "i'm sorry. don't be afraid of me, please."
sam knew that steve didn't know how to handle his emotions well, so she shook her head. "don't worry. i know you wouldn't hurt me."
the bell rang, so they went their separate ways. sam decided to go to the restroom before class.
as she stepped out, she saw the curly haired boy walking around the corner. she sped up and turned the corner as well. "billy." she called out. he continued to walk without paying her any attention. sam sighed, "billy!" she tried again.
billy stopped in his tracks and stood still. sam decided to walk up to him.
"yes?" billy answered shortly. he looked bored as he stared at her.
"why haven't you um called?" she muttered.
billy began to laugh, clutching his stomach and all. "sorry, what? we kiss once and you think i owe something to you? that's not how it works, sweetheart," he told her bitterly.
sam stepped back. where was the fragile billy asking her about her kindness? she felt her cheeks turning a deep shade of red. she felt humiliated. "i should've known better than to let someone like you kiss me."
even as those words left her mouth, she could not believe she had said them. there had been such anger directed to him. she had emphasized certain to words that made it all sound even worse. she made it sound like she was much better than him.
she could've sworn she saw his face fall a little, but it was probably a trick of the light. she spun on her heel and walked away from billy hargrove.
she walked into her class slowly. she was already late, so everyone stared at her as she walked in. as she made her way to a desk, she heard the word "slut" being thrown around. she closed her eyes and sighed.
once she was seated a girl next to her turned to face her. "how did you do it?" she asked. sam continued to face forward.
"c'mon! tell me your secrets. why are steve and billy suddenly interested in you? did you beg? or wait . . . did your parents pay them? sorry, i mean did your mom pay them?" the girl turned to face a couple people who laughed.
sam continued to ignore them. even though the comments about her dad pissed her off, she stayed completely calm.
she knew the answer to her questions. steve started talking to her because he needed help with chemistry. billy only bothered her because he wanted to anger steve.
during lunch, people continued to taunt her. asking her how it felt to be a whore. she walked through the halls with people following behind her.
"man, it must feel good to know that she's got STD's," a boy chuckled.
it felt crazy to her what one kiss could do. one kiss that wasn't even worth it in the end. she didn't know why she thought billy would want to do more with her. she knew that he was seen kissing someone almost every day. she fell right into his trap. so, she's to blame for all the negativity.
as steve approached her, she heard the footsteps of the people behind her switch direction.
"how you holding up?" he asked. he stared at her and bit his lip nervously.
"it sucks, steve. i regret letting him kiss me. i don't know why i thought that he would be different just because he said all the right things when we were there." she recalled his beautiful smile and his gentleness. "i should've listened to you," she mumbled.
"it's okay. you'll be okay. i've got you," steve wrapped his arms around her again. at this time, nancy walked by and he let her go suddenly.
"steve?" sam asked but noticed nancy looking at steve with a smile as she walked by next to jonathan. sam felt a sudden feeling in her chest that she did not like.
"huh? sorry." he turned to face sam.
"love to know that you've definitely got me," she finished her sarcastic remark with an eye roll. steve noticed and looked at her like "really?"
she sighed and turned to walk in the opposite direction, but he grabbed her wrist and pulled her into his chest. "i'm sorry, okay? i promise you that i do have your back. i just get weird when she's around."
sam nodded her head. she understood. she hated that she was acting jealous for someone that wasn't hers.
