"this is very delicious," jack told sam's mother.

they were eating mexican enchiladas. a food that wasn't very common amongst people in indiana.

"incredibly! i've never tasted something so pure," added steve.

"oh, you two! i'm glad sam has very good taste in friends," she blushed. "steve, i'm very happy to have you here today."

steve returned a smile with his mouth full of food. everyone laughed except jack.

jack glared at steve from across the table, but steve seemed to not notice. steve was fully focused on sam.

sam invited steve to dinner the day after breakfast to sort of pay him back in a way for taking her out to eat. home cooked food was always so much better.

jack joined the family for dinner every wednesday, so it wasn't unusual to have him around. however, sam's mother kept paying a bit more attention to steve unintentionally.

"what do you plan on doing after high school, steve?"

"well, if i'm being honest, i'm not sure yet. i do know that i'm not moving away, but i'm not sure what i would like to build for myself here." steve replied honestly. steve looked at sam for comfort. he always felt embarrassed to speak about his future, as it was unplanned.

"oh that's completely okay! sam doesn't know what she's going to do either," she replied.

sam looked at her and blushed. both steve and jack smiled at sam's embarrassment.

"steve, hows school going now?"

"momma, jack's here too." sam whispered.

"oh but steve is here for the first time, honey. he's cute! maybe he could be you—"

"mom!" sam groaned. her mother was not good at whispering.

steve smirked as he drank some fruit punch. he turned to sam's mother, "why thank you, mrs williams. you are a very beautiful young lady, yourself," he grinned.

"he's right about that, mrs. dubs. not only are you beautiful, but you're extremely smart and kind." jack raised his glass and winked.

"gee, thank you for the compliments you guys!" sam said sarcastically and rolled her eyes.

"oh honey! no need to be jealous, but i do think they love me more than you," she chuckled.

sam shook her head and laughed. she stood up to pick up the plates, but steve was already doing so.

"oh steve, you don't have to. really!" sam exclaimed. she tried to rush herself, but she made a bit of a mess.

"no, it's okay. i rarely have home cooked meals. i am more than grateful." he smiled at mrs. williams and continued to pick up the plates. sam sat down and smiled at steve.

after everything was picked up, jack headed to her room. steve walked towards the door after saying goodbye to her mother.

sam followed him out the door.

"thank you for this, samantha. it felt amazing. your mother is very kind and open minded. my family aren't very kind about my cluelessness about my future." steve smiled and put his hands in his pockets.

"of course. it was nice having you here. you're always welcome. i'm glad you asked for my help, steve. in two days, i have learned that you're someone i'll get along with well." she leaned against the door frame and crossed her arms.
