As the door hinges let out their ear-piercing screech, I quickly moved to cover my ears. Or at least what I think are my ears. Only seconds later, a thud is heard and the door closes. I nudge Sarah to wake up so she doesn't fall forward as I go to move towards the door, and as she sits up I quickly move out from below her and turn towards the door. As my eyes follow the path from the door to the opposite wall, they freeze on the form starting to shift against the wall. I don't move from my crouched position, trying to keep them from noticing me before Sarah. If they did they would probably panic. When Sarah notices the shifting of the form, she slowly gets up to go see who, or what, it is.
As she got closer, the person sat up. They looked.. relatively normal from what I can see, buts it's dark. After a few seconds, they notice Sarah standing by them, and shrink back for a second in surprise. After a second, a familiar voice rings in my ears. "Oh my God... Sarah?!" It was Alex! One of mine and Sarah's best friends! She sprung off the floor and wrapped her arms around Sarah. "Oh my god your ok! We thought you were dead!"
Sarah laughed, and hugged back. "Nope, it'll take a lot more than growing a tail and some new ears to take me down!" That's when Alex paused for a second, and assessed Sarah. She looked shocked, and confused. After what seemed like an eternity, all she seemed to be able to muster out was "... What...? Happened?" She looked like she didn't even know if she was dreaming or not.
With a small sigh, Sarah took a quick, unnoticed glance at me, and started explaining. "I don't know what happened, but I was dragged off into this.. evil doctor's office looking room. And they injected me with some sort of serum or liquid. I passed out, and woke up here... With some new appendages..." She sighed again, and looked down at her feet. She looked pained, and I wanted to go comfort her, but I couldn't.
After a bit of silence, Alex quietly asks "do they.. hurt..?" As she looks at Sarah's ears. Sarah looks up at her, and says "No! Don't worry, I'm fine!" which brought a look of relief to Alex's face. She smiles a bit. "At least I know that one of you is alive and.. relatively fine..." At that I froze. And I could see Sarah stiffened as well. She slowly started "Define... 'relatively fine' for me?" Alex looked at her confused, but answered. "Ya know.. Alive. Uninjured.... Breathing is good too.... Whhyyy?" I watched as Sarah nervously scratched the back of her head, while I mentally begged her not to do it.
"Well ya seeee..." Sarah started, "I guess we're both alive and 'relatively fine' by your definition..." As soon as Sarah said that, Alex's eyes went wide. "SHE'S HERE?!?" Sarah nods nervously. At that, Alex whips her head around, seemingly looking right past me. "Where?! Is she in a different cell? Is she in the doctor room? Did they take her out for testing? Is she-" Sarah stopped her by putting her hand just in front of Alex's mouth."Alex... She's in the cell with us..." As Alex did a more thorough scan, Sarah continued "but when you see her please don't be-" Alex interupted her with a scream. Both Sarah and I held our hands over our ears. "Scared..." Sarah finished. Alex hid behind Sarah, whispering "what is that thing??" I let out a low growl and turned around, facing the wall and curling up. As I did I saw Alex flinch. Is it really that bad..?
"Alex... This..." I hear footsteps walking towards me "is... this is Ari... This is what they did to her..." I curled up tighter as I felt a hand resting on my back. There were minutes of silence, before I heard a second set of footsteps approach. They stopped momentarily as I shifted my tail, but started again soon after. Seconds later, I felt another hand on my back, but soon retract. "Ari..? Is that really you?" I curled up tighter. I didn't want her to look at me. Or know I was here. Part of me wishes she still thought I was dead. Anything better than not being recognized by one of your best friends, and then have them scream in fear when they see you.  But my thoughts were interupted when I felt a pair of arms wrap around me, followed by quiet sobbing and a whispered "I'm so sorry.... I'm so so so so sorry....". It stayed like this for a while, until they pulled away. "Ari.. can you look at me?" I curled tighter. "Please?" and tighter. "Ari please.." and tighter. But after a minute, I relaxed my body, and turned toward her. I could see the pain and sadness in her eyes. She put her hands on the sides of my face, and rubbed one of my cheeks with her thumb. I then realized that I have scales on the side of my face, because the touch of one hand is drastically different than the other. I look down, and lean into on of her hands. "You two are... Drastically different..." Alex mutters quietly. Sarah sighs "When I first got here, she already went through a round of testing... When they came to get me, she tried to stop them. And as punishment, they... Well... You see what they did..." Alex looked at me with pity in her eyes, and I pulled my face away and curled up again.
"Ari I-" I silenced her with a growl.
