CHAPTER XI
< Rayne Ames and Yellow Light Sticks >
Stepping into the Spotlight Arc

RAYNE Ames sat at his desk quietly. His mind was far from the reports and papers strewn across his workspace, eyes glazed over as he stared at a single page, the words blurring together. His thoughts were consumed by his little brother, Finn, and tonight's upcoming Cherry Blossom Star Fest performance.

Of course, Rayne would watch, but what worried him was whether Finn would perform well later. He deeply wanted his brother to succeed and be happy. The updates he'd gotten from his little brother for the past week had only been vague 'It's going well' and 'I'm doing good' answers.

Is Finn really doing well so far? Is he hiding something? Or was Rayne simply overthinking?

The door creaked open, but Rayne didn't notice. His mind was too occupied with thoughts of Finn's big debut, picturing every possible scenario. What if Finn tripped? What if he forgot the lyrics?

"Rayne."

What if his voice cracks mid-song? What if he falls off the stage? What if—

"Rayne!"

He snapped out of his thoughts, finally realizing that someone was in the room. He blinked up to see Kaldo standing in front of him, holding a stack of papers, a slightly amused look on his face.

"Oh, didn't see you there," He muttered, quickly trying to gather his scattered thoughts. Kaldo placed the papers on Rayne's desk, leaning against the edge with his arms crossed.

Initially, he was just going to deliver the papers that both their administrations needed to sign, but the unfocused Sword Cane made him nosy.

"You've been staring at that same report for the last ten minutes. What's eating you?" Kaldo asked, his sharp eyes studying him.

"It's nothing," Rayne replied bluntly, going back to focusing on his work.

Kaldo grinned, finding Rayne to be so easy to read. After training Finn to maintain his second line and improve his healing abilities during his time at Easton, the Flame Cane learned a lot about the two's estranged relationship.

Though the two have since reconciled, his little student was rather talkative when complaining about his big brother. From something as simple as going to sleep late, to contemplating about a job, Rayne was said to be too overprotective of Finn.

The Ames siblings sure are an interesting bunch.

"Is this about Finn-kun?" Kaldo stepped next to him with a suspiciously curious gaze.

"What about him?" Rayne sounded nonchalant.

"Well, a little bee told me my old student is now an idol." The Flame Cane grinned, "I saw his online reception, it looks like he's got it a bit rough."
