A small blond haired boy in choo-choo train pajamas with wet puffy red eyes stumbles through you and Riker’s bedroom door. He hops onto the bed squeezing in between the two of you. Clinging to you both he shakes lightly dampening the blankets.
You’re the one to wake up first. After flipping the lamp on you rub your eyes yawning. Seeing the small figure of your oldest child beside you.
“What’s wrong baby?” You gently ask him in a soothing voice running your fingers though his delicate hair.
He hesitates at first in telling you tears still sliding down his cheeks. “They were gonna get me.”
“Who was going to get you?” You wipe his damp face.
“The scary monsters!” He closes his eye tightly only to open them again. Apparently the frightening vision still lingers.
You open your arms wide, “I can keep the monsters away.”
He frowns shaking his head curling into a ball. “No you can’t mommy.” He mumbles.
You lower your arms disappointed. Your son’s always been more of a daddy’s boy. Reaching over him you nudge Riker’s shoulder, this sort of thing required professional assistance.
“Wha?” Riker flips over eyes adjusting to the light.
“Daddy!” Your son hurdles into his un-expecting arms burying his face into your husband’s bare chest.
Riker gives you a questioning look over the child’s shoulder.
“Nightmare.” You month to him and right away he understands nodding.
Riker rubs his son’s back attempting to calm him down. A few minutes later he pulls away from the embrace to examine his composure. “What happen?”
Stuttering the little blondie, without reluctance, tells the whole story. “I-I was in a dark place, a-and these scary monsters they roared at me. Th-th-then they chased me everywhere. I tried to hide but they found me.” He wraps his arms around Riker’s neck once more talking into his shoulder. “I wanted you. To save me.”
At that your heart melted. Yes you were a bit jealous of his and Riker’s relationship, but it was too cute to hold a grudge.
Speaking softly your husband tells the boy, “It’s okay, I’m here to save you now. Don’t worry the monsters won’t be coming back anytime soon.” Giving one more tight squeeze he lets go. “Now you better get back to bed. It’s extremely late.” Nodding the boy shifts to leave. “Hold on there tiger. Aren’t you gonna give mommy a hug and kiss.”
Gasping your son widens his eyes, “I almost forgot!” He turns and leaps into your arms as well reaching up and lightly kissing your cheek. “I love you mommy.”
“I love you too sweetie.” You kiss his forehead before setting him free.
Jumping off the bed he scoots to the door with little strides. “Night.” He waves before exiting.
After he closes the door you lie back down turning to face Riker smiling sweetly caressing his cheek.
“What?” He looks at you eyes smiling.
“Why are you the favorite?”
“Because…” He tickles you knowing your weakness. “I’m just that awesome.” You laugh, at the tickling and his reasoning.
The tickling subsides and his hands are now on either side, body leaning over you. “I might be his favorite but you are mine.” With that he leans down and kisses you tenderly.
Breaking apart the two of you just smile at one another staring into each other’s eyes in comfortable silence. Well silence until baby girl crying is suddenly heard in the background.
Sighing Riker looks down at you innocently. “Could you get this one?”
You give him the look.
“Pwease?” He pouts speaking as if he’s three again.
Rollin’ your eyes you give in, “Fine, but you owe me.”
“I’m always here.” He gestures to his body.
“Weirdo.” Mindlessly you through a pillow in his general direction.
Dodging he laughs shrugging his shoulders, “Well you married me.”
Jokingly glaring at him you walk out the door giggling to yourself and whispering under your breath, “Yes, yes I did.”
