It’s two in the afternoon and the weather outside is beautiful.  The sun is out but its not too hot and there’s a sprinkle of clouds across the light blue sky.

You walk down the sidewalk next to your new husband Riker giggling and teasing each other, just talking about life.

“So then I asked him- wait, did you hear that?”  Riker pauses straining his ears.

You look at him not understanding what he’s saying.  “What are you talking about?”

“Didn’t you hear that?  From over there in the ally.”  He points beginning to drift in that direction.

Reaching out and grabbing his arm you question, “Hold on there.  Normally when you hear a strange noise coming from a sketchy ally you don’t go see what made it!”

“It’s fine, it’s… There it is again!  That noise, it’s like a whimper or something.”  He doesn’t stop walking.

“Riker, I don’t think it’s safe.  Let’s get out of here.”  Worry shows in your voice but he doesn’t even notice because curiosity has already taken over.

Realizing that there’s nothing you can do you give up a go with him walking cautiously into the shadowy ally.

To your left you hear a whimper and snap to look the way the sound came.

“See, I told you I heard something.”

“It came from that box.”  Grasping on to his strong arm with both hands you gesture with your head to the soggy tattered brown box drooping beside the dumpster.

Both of you slowly approach the box.

The mysterious sound grows louder, rapid pips as you hover over it.

Riker reaches a long hand down opening the top flap revealing a small fluffy looking creature.  A puppy.

You turn to him and see his eyes pop out of his head wide grin spread across his face.

The tiny puppy yelps loudly jumping against the side of the box overly excited at visitors.

Riker quickly but gently picks up the puppy that’s a reddish color with white accents, short ears and stubby legs, no tail wagging behind it.  You instantly recognize the breed.

“Aw, that’s a Corgi!”

“Yeah, that’s right.  Didn’t you have those growing up?”

“Yep.  They are such sweet dogs.”

The adorable creature, which is determined as a girl, madly gives Riker’s fingers a bath with her soft moist tongue.

“Ha!  It tickles!”  He laughs eyes bright.

She, the puppy, seems to have a strong liking for Riker, taking limited notice to you.

What really bothers you about this situation is that a beautiful little animal is sitting abandoned in a dark ally.  You want to know the whole story.  Why anyone would think that doing this kind of thing is okay?  It’s a living creature for goodness sake!  People really frustrate you sometimes.

“Hey, babe?”  Riker lets out softly.

“Yes.”  You answer being brought back to Earth from your thoughts.

“Um… a, can we possibly… um.  I-I know we just got back from our honeymoon and are trying to get our feet on the ground, but um… can we keep it?”

His eyes sparkle like a child and you can tell he already really loves the small dog.  With him never having a pet growing up you know, because he’s told you several times before, that he absolutely wants one now.

Taking a second or two you think finally settling on an answer for him.

“All right, yes we can keep it.”

Riker jumps up, puppy still in arms, and gives you a huge hug.  Puppy gently sandwiched between.

“Well shall we go?”  Riker says breaking the embrace.  “This ally is starting to give me the creeps.”

“Yeah, let’s get out of here my two puppies.”  You kiss his cheek wrapping your arm around his waist.

“Wait!  We need a name.”

“I don’t know.  You can pick whatever you like.”  You smile at him.

“I like Heidi.”  He stares down at the animal petting her head.  She barks gazing up at him too.  Apparently she really likes her new name.

“Sounds good.  Um, Riker?”

“Yeah.”  He half turns to you a bit distracted.

“You’re not gonna replace me are you?”  You say this as a joke, well sort of.  You really are afraid he’ll give his new friend more attention.

“Of course not.  You’re my number one girl.”  He kisses your cheek this time.  “Are you really jealous of a dog?”  He smirks giggling at you.

You look down chuckling yourself.  “Maybe…”

Riker raises your chin to look you in the eyes.  “Come on I love you too much to put anything before you.”

“Good.” Is all you say before he leans in and kisses you sweetly.  Heidi yips in the background moving to lick both of your faces, still pressed together.

Snickering the two of you break apart.  Now the three of you really are a family.
