Slaves relied heavily on conductors to get them around the Underground Railroad. Conductors were called conductors because they led slaves along the Railroad, sometimes providing food, clean water, survival supplies, and other important goods. Some slaves even became conductors themselves after becoming free. According to HISTORY.com, Harriet Tubman, one of the most well-known slaves in history, found her way to the north in 1849 and took several trips back to the farm she escaped from to help other slaves and family, helping large groups of slaves runaway to the north, often making trips from the north to Canada, distrusting the United States to keep them safe.

The third night of constant pain had come. I sat down for a quick rest. I was starving, only getting water from the occasional stream the I happened to past. It was getting dark, so I sat by the side of the path. While trying to get comfortable I saw lantern light approach me.

The sound of horse trot following it like a bad odor.

I quickly ducked behind a bush attempting to not be seen, but alas the rider caught a glimpse. He called out to me asking where I was. I looked up finding no point in trying to hide anymore and told him that I was there. He asked me who I was and I didn't answer out of pure fear. He then asked if I was going somewhere, and I gave him a small, solemn nod, he asked me where and I again didn't dare answer.  He asked if I was a runaway slave, and then, quickly, he claimed to be a conductor of the Underground Railroad, who was patrolling for any runaways. I couldn't tell if this true or not. If it was indeed a lie that scared me, to know that there was a bounty hunter who knew that the railroad existed. I was trying to tell for me whether he could be telling the truth or selling a lie when he offered a ride to the next station saying that it would be a grueling walk and that if I hitched a ride it would be much faster. I couldn't tell if I wanted to trust him or not, my mind racing to find my own answer.

A. believe him, I need to get the nearest station quickly I trust him. (turn to chapter 3)
B. don't believe him, he seems suspicious it could be a bounty hunter in disguise. (turn to chapter 4)
