Slaves didn't always have to go all the way up to the far north to be safe from slavery, there were times when lawyers would take slaves cases, and in some cases the  district county may ask lawyers to represent slaves in the court of law, such as Squire Johnson, as he was known, who was asked by the county district to represent a slave named Cuffee.

I decided his offer was too good to pass up. I agreed and he said he could get me to court soon. I asked him if he knew a place to stay because technically I was still on the run. He looked at me oddly for a moment then his eyes lit up and he said that I could stay at his house. I was starting to get suspicious but I needed some rest, so I agreed to his offer, still ready for anything to happen.

I followed him in the direction he had been going before bumping into me and after about fifteen minutes, we arrived at a large looking house on the edge of town. He let me in and the second I came in I spun around. The man looked very surprised at my reaction and I asked him if he had a wife, to keep his own suspicion low. He shook his bewilderment away and responded to my question. He didn't have a wife because it usually impended children, and a man of his work didn't have the time or patience to have them. It was reasonable. So I left it at that.

The day came in a few months, but I was so anxious that it felt like only a few weeks had passed. The trial was set, and the man was planning to sue my master for 30,000 dollars so I could buy my freedom.

The trial seemed to drag on and on, but the man was good at what he did. At every point my master's lawer made the he seemed to have a comeback, and another point to go along. It went back and foureth for almost the entire day, if it was a sports game it would have been double to my side. When the trial finialy ended It seemed like the day had been a few weeks, but at the same time felt like only a few hours. In two days we got back the reasult.

I was free.
