Slave catchers and Watchmen often may have killed slaves while trying to capture them, whether it was because their dogs got too aggressive, or that the weapons they used were too harmful, but if they were killed it would not be considered a felony. It also wouldn't be a crime if a slave owner killed them during punishments.
I ran a bit farther into the woods and waited, hiding in some shrubbery. After about fifteen minutes I decided to head northeast again to find a town or station to get my leg healed. It was unbearable the pain but I just kept going. I found the town around dusk, with my injury crossing the clearing was a tedious task. I waited for nightfall and then searched for someplace to help me. I saw the lantern on a building resembling, to my surprise, a medical facility. I quickly thanked the Lord for this miracle and checked the window to see if anyone was inside, and only saw a woman sitting in a chair. I knocked on the door quickly, the pain in my leg rising steadily.
The woman looked up through the small diamond window. It was kind of fancy, with distorted glass that made it look like it was made out of clear gravel, but she could see my face clearly enough. She opened the door and pulled me inside. She started bringing me somewhere and I got a little paranoid, in my defense with all that has gone on it was semi-justified, but she didn't lock me up or do anything evil, the old lady led me to a bookshelf, but it was at a higher speed making my leg sting again, behind it was a small bed, and a few shelves of food. when she sat me down she looked down to my leg and saw the blood stain, then asked to take a look. At this point, my head was so numb with pain and relieving pain from my leg, that I decided it would probably be fine, she was a doctor right?
The woman bandaged my leg up and gave me pain medicine to sooth my injury. After taking the medicine I eventually started to feel drowsy, and before I knew it I woke up. I walked over to where the hidden door was, and I knocked. It took about a minute, but eventually, the old lady came and let me out. I was a little relieved, the confined space had gotten me a tiny bit paranoid. The woman asked me if I wanted breakfast, and I happily obliged. She went off towards the kitchen, but there was a knock on the door. I looked out of the window from where I was, and a familiar face showed up. I couldn't recognize it at first, but then I realized who it was. The bounty hunter who had attempted to trick me into riding his wagon. I pried open the door with as much effort as possible and slipped in. I wasn't sure if he had seen me or not. In a panic, I looked around the room and found another patch on the wall that matched the texture and color of the bookshelf door, but smaller. I guessed it was another door maybe a back way out. If I left he may see me if it led to another part of the house, but if I stayed he may have seen me and tried to chase me.
A. Go out the door. better to play it safer and going out the back is safer than staying. (go to chapter 14)
B. Stay. There was no way he saw you, the window is too distorted to see you from where he was. (go to chapter 15)
