Act One, Chapter Two

Maddie's day so far had royally sucked. She had tripped down the stairs on her way to the kitchen that morning, burnt her yummy breakfast pancakes, had a minor car accident (she was fine, but her parents were gonna throw a fit anyways. Besides, it was totally the other guy's fault.), and now she was being called down to the principal's office.

She hadn't meant to punch Yong Soo in the face. Okay, that was a lie. She totally had. But he had insulted her fantastic pancake making skills!

He had laughed at her tale of misery, going so far as to tell her that she wouldn't have burnt her pancakes if she had had any baking skills to begin with.

...

...

Maddie hoped it had hurt when she broke his nose.

She was generally a very nice person, but all of that pent up rage had to go somewhere. Passive aggressiveness only worked for so long. Yong Soo just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

The short blonde approached the office and was told to wait in a chair in the hallway. The principal was busy with another student, but he would see her in a moment.

Maddie waited nervously for a half hour, and she began to wonder what exactly the student could do to garner this long a lecture. Maniacal laughter and a loud crash interrupted her thoughts. An albino student burst from the room with an insane look in his eyes, and a weary principal followed directly behind.

He gave Maddie a glance, and then turned to the albino.

"Gilbert, behave yourself. I mean it. And Madeline," he said, turning to face her, "I will see you in a moment. I need some time to... Organize."

Maddie raised a confused brow. When he opened the door to return inside, she stole a peek into his office. It honestly looked like a tornado had made it's way through the room. Papers and office supplies were scattered everywhere, the desk had somehow been turned upside down, and the chairs were tastefully sprinkled around the room. Had the albino really done all that?

She turned to get another look at him and blanched. It was Gilbert Beilschmidt, infamous for his mischievous I-don't-give-a-crap attitude. He was no longer laughing, and the insane look in his eyes had disappeared. Instead, a light smirk graced his features as he surveyed his handiwork. He turned to go, but stopped when he saw Maddie, his red eyes locking onto her violet ones.

He stared.

She stared.

They both stared some more.

"..."

"..."

Crap. Now it was awkward.

------------------------------------------

Gilbert honestly didn't know what to think. He couldn't think. He was too busy looking like an idiot in front of the most adorable girl that had ever walked the earth. She probably hated him. Wait, what was he saying?! He was Gilbert freaking Beilschmidt, the single most awesome person in existence! What would Old Fritz say if he were here? Oh, right! He should try and salvage the situation! Here goes...

"So much for a first impression, right? I'm Gilbert Beilschmidt. Nice to meet ya." Gilbert winked and flashed Maddie his best smile. There was no way she could resist his awesome if he turned up the charm!

"I know-I mean, not because I like, stalk you or anything, it's just that there isn't anyone who doesn't know you, you're practically a celebrity, and um...I'm babbling, aren't I?! I'm so sorry!" The girl's face blushed bright red, and she covered her face with her hands.

All thoughts of NOT asking the Canadian out on a date were swept from Gilbert's mind when he heard Maddie speak. Her voice was just so delicate and sweet! An adoring smile spread across his face, and he made a small cooing noise in the back of his throat.

"That was awesome! Just like a little bird~ Can I call you Birdie?" Gilbert mentally slapped himself- 'Like a little bird?!' Pathetic! How unawesome could he get?

Maddie's face reddened in embarrassment and surprise, and a small 'Eh?!' escaped her lips. She looked over at Gilbert, who seemed...mortified? Gilbert, THE Gilbert Beilschmidt, the one who never showed any emotions except awesomeness, was just as embarrassed as she was.

The thought made her want to laugh, and before she could stop herself a small giggle escaped her lips. It was more a release of nervous tension than anything else, but Gilbert's head snapped up in surprise and relief. Laughing was a good thing, right? If she was laughing, then that meant that he hadn't screwed up too badly!

"Sure, you can call me Birdie, eh. If you still want to, I mean..." Maddie trailed off, a questioning look in her eyes.

"Yeah, that'd be awesome! You can call me Gil, then. All of my awesome friends do." Gilbert grinned. "Anyways Birdie, I have to go to class, and and you have a principal to see." As if on cue, the stern looking man opened his door and beckoned Maddie inside.

"Come inside, please. I need to talk to you." He glanced over at the albino, and didn't seem all too surprised that he was still there. "And Gilbert, go to class. Now."

"Yes, sir. See you later, Birdie!" Gilbert smirked and sauntered off down the hallway, on his way to do something that was definitely not going to class. The principal sighed and gave Maddie a resigned look.

"He really doesn't listen to anything I say. Now then, let's get this over with."
