Red Crandall

The next day at college, Sarah and I attend Dr. Jones's class. She's in a good mood this morning. That's why I haven't had the heart to talk to her about it yet. When she learns that an original is on his way back to the city, moreover, when she hears that it's Viktor Bartholy, her joie de vivre will melt like snow in the sun. Her family hates him deeply and I can understand them. This guy is a monster. It's just a pity that the witches' clan should regard the boys in the same way. They've gone to great lengths to master their primitive impulses, yet people keep hating them and shut them out.

As the class ends I take the time to put my things away waiting for the lecture theater to empty. I wish to speak to Dr. Jones... in private.

"Are you coming?"

"Yes, yes, I'll meet you outside. I have something to ask Professor Jones. It won't take long."

"You don't want me to stay with you?"

"No. It's fine. Thank you all the same, Sarah." She shrugs, smiling.

"That's what friends are for."

She walks away and leaves the room. During all this time, Sebastian Jones has not taken his eyes off me.

"Red?"

I hasten down to him. I don't know how I'm going to bring the subject up, but I need to know what he thinks of my dream.

"You told me that I could come see you if I had the slightest question about anything..."

"I did indeed."

"Professor..."

"How about calling me, Sebastian. Something tells me that you'll often need to see me. I'm not sure it's regulatory, but why not."

"Sebastian, what do you know about premonitory dreams?"

"Premonitory dreams? I must admit that you have all my attention."

"I have a friend who thinks that her dream may come true..."

"A friend?"

I can see that Sebastian isn't convinced, but I don't want to say too much about it.

"Is that kind of dream possible?"

"Yes, of course. In certain tribes, they're a very serious matter. Tell me more."

"My friend was attacked by... monsters."

Sebastian tenses immediately. He suddenly seems distant deep in dark thought.

"There was also an owl to protect me... I mean... to protect my friend."

"You know, I'm not fooled, may as well put all your cards on the table, Red. It's about you, isn't it? This dream is yours..."

"Yes, it's mine."

"You needn't worry, I won't divulge anything you tell me."

"It's just... It could get complicated, if I talk about it, I'm not supposed to, but..."

"But you needed an outside opinion. I can understand that."

"So there was this owl in my dream, the same one that's often around my house. I see it all the time. It even let me stroke it a few times, I wonder what it means."

"Owls are extremely symbolic."

"Really?"

"They often refer to the ability to see beyond what is concealed, behind the mask, of discerning what others can't."
