She had felt her heart start racing the instant the plane touched down in Beacon Hills, California. Whether it was from the excitement of being reunited with her family and friends or the fear of the past that had occurred in the not so sleepy little town, Maya couldn't decide which the feeling was better suited towards. Either way, she had come home and there was no turning back.

"Maya Williams, get your cute ass over here."

The mermaid smiled as a blur of red stormed over, pulling her into a tight hug. In spite of the events that happened before she left and the fact that she had spent the summer in Michigan, Lydia Martin and Maya Williams had managed to become quite close. In all honesty, she was one of the few people the girl kept in contact with outside of her family while she was away.

"Hey, Lyds, it's good to see you."

"You have no idea how lonely I've been all summer with both you and Allison gone." Lydia complained.

The brunette grinned, "Don't worry, I'm not planning on leaving again anytime soon."

"Good," Lydia smirked and grabbed Maya's arm to pull her along towards the car. "now come on, you have to change and then we are getting Allison."

Maya was confused, "Why exactly am I changing?"

"Because we have a small group thing we're going to later and while I normally love your sense of style," Her eyes glanced over Maya's clothes with a look of disproval. "I'm not letting you show up in wrinkled airplane clothes."

With just a sigh, Maya let herself be led away. Honestly she was glad that this was happening as it brought along a sense of normalcy. When she left Beacon Hills there was a fear that when she came back, things would be different. Yet, now as she was getting pulled outside to Lydia's car while being forced to endure her fashion advice, she was just like any other teenager. That put her at ease and she didn't want it to go away just yet. A nagging suspicion in the back of her mind told her to enjoy it while it lasted as things never stay quite in Beacon Hills.

"Did you tell them you were back yet?"

Maya heaved out a sigh, the burst of air messing up her bangs. "No...I'm not quite sure I'm ready to face them."

Lydia cast a quick glance at the brunette beside her, "Scott and Stiles are your best friends, Maya. I don't think they're physically capable of holding a grudge against you."

"Not even after I spent a summer ignoring them?"

"You needed space," Lydia absentmindedly tapped her fingers along the steering wheel. "I think they could understand that more than anyone. After everything that happened with Jackson and your powers...you just needed time away to figure everything out."

That was one of the things she appreciated about this newfound friendship with Lydia Martin. The girl always managed to talk her out of her worst fears and insecurities. Numerous times over the summer there had been late night calls, both girls venting their frustrations and worries to someone that understood their plight. As much as she wanted to share her thoughts with her two best friends as she had with Lydia, there was just too much of a disconnect that made her feel as if she were drowning between their pity and their worry.

In no time at all, air plane clothes were exchanged for a new look and the car was headed towards the Argent residence. Lydia parked out front, checking her makeup as they waited for Allison to come outside. Her phone buzzed in her pocket making Maya shift her focus from Lydia to the device.

From Batman:

Scott just got a god awful tattoo. Wish you were here to talk him out of it.
