"First day of eighth grade, you nervous?"

Darren shook his head as he gathered up his stuff. "Not in the slightest."

Maya nodded, tapping the rim of the coffee cup resting on the kitchen counter. "This is the last year before high school. They grow up so fast."

"Nah," Darren teased "you're just getting old."

"Listen here you little-"

She felt a tug at her scalp, "Is that a gray hair I see?"

"Ha ha, very hilarious guys." Maya scowled at her family.

After the summer apart, it felt good to fall back into the chaotic morning routine of the Williams household. Maya had missed her family while she was away in Michigan. But in all honesty, the separation seemed like it had improved her relationship with her dads and brother- the weight of having to lie to them had been off of her shoulders for months.

"Come on granny, I don't want to be late for my first day."

Maya flipped him off, ignoring the admonishing glare from her fathers over the use of a middle finger. Snatching up her backpack and lunch, the brunette was out the door, shouting a goodbye over her shoulder. Darren was already in the car fiddling with the music.

"God, you need to update your collection."

She batted his hand away, "You know the rules: driver picks the music, shotgun shuts their  cakehole."

Darren rolled his eyes at the phrase. "Just because it was said in an episode of Supernatural, doesn't mean it applies to me."

"That's where you're wrong little bro."

For the rest of the ride, the siblings bickered over the music. Darren trying to switch over to the radio and Maya smacking his hands away from the controls. Finally, after dropping the boy off at middle school, Maya got her wish of listening to her songs as she tried to calm the first day jitters. Usually the back to school nerves never affected the girl, but today was apparently the exception. After the incident yesterday, Maya was still rather on edge and something in the back of her mind kept telling her that the series of unfortunate events was only going to continue.

It had been a few minutes since pulling into a parking spot, sitting there nervously tapping on the steering wheel. Maya jumped when Lydia tapped her knuckles against the window. The strawberry blonde nodded her head in the direction of the building, but Maya waved a hand silently letting her know she still needed a minute. The Martin apprehensively nodded and walked away, leaving the mermaid to sort herself out. Maya groaned when she looked down and saw the ice connecting her hands to the steering wheel. Being so on edge and having Lydia startle her must've inadvertently activated her powers. The brunette frowned and shook her head, trying to retain the calm and tranquility she'd spent her summer establishing.

"Focus on your light, not the shadows it creates"

She let out the breath she'd been holding and cracked open an eye. A triumphant smile played on her lips when Maya realized she'd melted the accidental ice she'd managed to create. When she came back, the mermaid promised herself that it would be her metamorphosis. No more letting her worries get the best of her. Maya Williams was too strong and badass for that. The mermaid decided it was time to march herself into Beacon Hills high school, head held high and ready to take on whatever was going to be thrown her way- she could handle it.

Scott had a grin on his face as he watched the brunette strut inside as if she owned the place. He had parked his bike just in time to witness her freak out, but it seemed like his best friend was taking control once again. It felt good to see her acting like her usual self- the summer of radio silence stung slightly less knowing it paid off in helping Maya gain control of her life and powers.
