It felt amazing. Now even if I die, I’ll die happily. I fall through the hole and something hits my body. A net, there was a net to catch us when we fall. I chuckle and relax and look above to see small heads looking down. They probably want to know if I’m dead or not. I didn’t scream and I’m proud of that.
Someone pulls the net down and arms come forward to grab me and help me down. It’s a guy with tanned skin and dark eyes. He has full lips and a serious expression. Beside him stands a girl with dark blond hair and a friendly smile.
“What’s your name?” she asks.
“Samantha Martinez.” I answer, still feeling thrilled with my little victory.
“You can shorten that if you want, most people do. But you only get to do it once.” The guy says looking at me expectantly.
“Sam, most people call me that already.”
“Alright, first jumper, Sam” he announces to the crowd in the room and people clap and shout happily. I get that being the first to jump is a plus here.
“Welcome to dauntless.” The girl says with a smile.
Next person to jump is Josh. Of course he follows me anywhere. He feels like he has this duty to protect me. They announce his name and he walks to me casually. Once he’s beside me he says, “You ok?” He’s whispering so only I can hear. He knows I don’t like him to be protective. I can take care of myself. I smile and nod my head once. He’s the best friend I could ever wish for. He never pushes me for information and gives me my space. And he cares but doesn’t show it much.
“You should’ve seen Eric’s face. He was pissed and impressed at the same time.” He says laughing hard. Definitely enjoying what I did.
“I hope he’s not planning my death already.” I say and laugh with him.
After a few minutes everyone is down here. Lindsey was the last transfer to jump. She screamed all the way down. I almost feel bad for her when I see her pale face. Eric jumps after dauntless born initiates are down. He falls into the net and jumps down gracefully, glaring at the guy who wants to help him. The guy grins and looks at the girl beside him, then starts to talk.
“Welcome everyone. I’m Four. This is Tris.” He mentions to the girl beside him. And she nods her head.
“Christina, Uriah, Tris and I are going to be your instructors.” He motions toward a young man and woman. They both have dark brown skin and seem tough. They smile.
“Dauntless born initiates come with us. You already know the place so you don’t need the tour. Come on.” Uriah says leading dauntless born initiates out of the room with Christina. Once they’re gone, Four continues, “You already met Eric. He’s a leader as you know and he’s gonna watch over your training.”
Eric has regained his emotionless and cold expression. He doesn’t even look my way. He’s standing with his arms crossed again and is showing off his muscles. I like his tattoos. He has piercings in his ears too. He looks more dangerous in this dark room. As I’m thinking all this, I’m not paying much attention to what’s going on around me. Eric’s eyes are suddenly on me, they’re ice cold. I shiver and look away as fast as I can. I’ve been caught by Eric himself. That can’t be good. I know I’m blushing and I hate it. I don’t dare to look back at him to check if he’s seen me blushing or not. Alexis nudges my side and says “Let’s go.”
Everyone’s leaving. We follow them out of the room. Eric’s not coming, so I visibly relax once we’re out of his sight.
“You looked like a tomato back there. What happened?” Bec asks me in a low voice.
