When I wake up the room is still quiet. I look at my watch, still half sleep. It’s 6:50. Well it’s almost 7 and that means someone will be here in 40 minutes to wake us up. I think now that I’m awake I might as well get ready. It’s the first day and I’m nervous. I get up quietly, grab my things and go to the bathrooms. After showering and putting some normal clothes on, I stand in front of the big mirror and look at my reflection. My long brown hair is still wet on my shoulder and my face is a bit pale, but nothing unusual. I’m still me. The only things different are my black clothes and the excitement in my eyes. I’m an ordinary girl with brown eyes, small nose and long brown hair. I’m 5ft 8in tall and a little curvy. I always wanted to be skinnier but everyone kept telling me that I’m alright. Josh used to tease me and say curvy is sexier and I always punched him after that. The only thing I love about my looks is my hair really. It’s quite long, a bit longer than waist length. I know some people call it too long but I like it. My hair is straight with a little bit of wave in the ends. I glance at my watch and it’s 7:15. How long have I spent looking in the mirror and doing nothing? Ok that’s enough. Back to work. I dry my hair with a towel and get out of the bathroom. Everyone’s still sleeping.

I decide to go out and look around. See what it’s like in the morning here. The place is still quiet. Most people are sleep. I make my way to the dining hall to see if there’s anything to eat. Some people are sitting here and there sipping their coffee or eating a muffin. I don’t know any of them. I pour myself some coffee and get out of there.

My next destination is the pit. It’s brighter than the last time I saw it. Shops are closed but I start walking to check them out anyway. I sip my coffee as I pass the tattoo parlor. We should check out this place as soon as possible. I can’t wait to get my first tattoo. I grin widely to myself and keep walking. Some clothing shops and make up shops. And Digital. It seems to be a special place. Like a bar, club or something.

I check my watch again. 7:27. Time to go back. Four Or Tris re probably on their way to the dorm already. I throw my coffee cup in the nearest trash can and leave the pit. I’m walking fast in the halls to be there at 7:30 so I don’t see someone walk into the corridor the same time as I do. I slam hard into someone and lose my balance. Arms come around me and catch my waist before I fall. Big arms. Seriously? Is this going to be a daily routine for me here or something? I look up ready to apologize until I see blue eyes staring at me. I immediately close my mouth and stare back at Eric. Oh god. It’s my first day here. Why?

He raises an eyebrow like he’s surprised. “What are you doing here kid?” He says casually, his arms still around me for some reason.

Kid? Kid? Why does he call me that? Sure he’s a lot older than me, but I’m not that small to be called a kid. Now I’m annoyed. “I’m sorry. I was running back to the dorms to be there before 7:30. I didn’t see you.” I say as I free myself from his arms and stepping back.

“Yeah I can see that. I mean what are you doing up? Running around.” He says as he starts walking again.

“I just grabbed some coffee.”

He doesn’t say anything else. We walk into the dorm. I want to ask him why he’s doing this himself. He’s a leader right? Why waking initiates is part of his job? He grabs an iron bar from somewhere and starts slamming it really hard against the metal bars in front of him. I jump at the loud noise and he chuckles as everyone wakes up and sit straight. Right, now I know why he came himself.

“Wake up initiates. 30 minutes.” He shouts and then turns towards me. He leans closer to me and smirks. “Did I scare you kid?” He says, definitely enjoying himself.

I set my jaw and stand straighter, trying to look taller. “Of course not.” I answer back stubbornly.

“Right.” He says as he turns to leave. He still has a satisfied gin on his face.
