Word of Gabe's death, and the arrest of both the princes traveled around the palace in minutes. What Darla didn't know was who she could trust, or where exactly Bessie was. She knew she could trust Bessie, and Bessie would probably have an idea on how to save the princes.
Darla asked around about Bessie and finally she found a couple people that knew where to find her. Darla was brought up to the top of the guard tower, by one of Maverick's closest friends from there, and sure enough Bessie was still fast asleep.
"Bessie, Bessie wake up. Wake up you drunk." Darla said shaking her.
Bessie moaned. "What I was trying to sleep!" She snapped.
The guard and Darla both shushed her. "Bessie while you were sleeping there has been some trouble. The king has betrayed his son, and locked the princes and their guards away in the dungeon. There's very few people we can trust, but we need to find a way to free them tonight because they are to be executed tomorrow morning."
Bessie sat up quickly. "God damnit I'm incapacitated for one damn day and those morons get themselves set to be killed. How many guards are watching them?"
"I think there are four. I can help you get down there, but we'll have to find a few more people to help us all escape. We'll also need a ride out." The guard said.
"I'll talk to the stable boy. I'm sure he'll be able to have several horses saddled and ready for our escape Bessie said. Then I'll go to the dungeon with you once it's dark enough. Darla, do you think you'll be able to find someone that can inconspicuously open the gates?"
"I might be able to find someone that will, but we need to time it just right. Once the gates are opened we'll only have a few minutes to get out before the night guards figure out something is wrong." Darla said.
"We better pray we get it exactly right then." Bessie said.
The two women split up then. Bessie went and talked to the stable boy. He was shook up about the news, but as soon as he heard about the jail break he quickly agreed to help. He told Bessie he would have most of the fastest horses saddled and waiting by nightfall, that way they could have plenty for the escape and several spares in case they planned on trying to ride for a longer period of time. No one knew exactly where the princes would go once they got out of the palace, but they would need to get there in a hurry.
Bessie also managed to round up a couple more people that were on prince Kapa's side. Then Bessie just had to wait until nightfall to start the jailbreak.
.....
Darla had a bit harder of a job. Most of the men that usually ran the gates were the ones that were on the side of the king. She had no one to trust, and couldn't ask around too much or she'd call unwanted attention to herself. She got lucky though when Dunston walked up to her.
"Miss Darla, aren't you out of your comfort zone out here. I thought you usually stayed inside." He said.
"Dunston dearie, have you heard the terrible news?" Darla questioned.
"Yes, word's gotten around to me out here. Did Maverick really kill the man for no reason though? I mean I know the guy seemed like a jerk, but Maverick wouldn't just slaughter him when he was outnumbered. Maverick was one of our best guards." Dunston said.
"It was a set up. The king did this all to get his son out of the way. We have to find a way to save them. Do you think you can open the palace gates tonight for them?" Darla asked.
"You have a way to get them out?" He questioned.
"Hopefully. I don't know exactly how yet, but we may be able to do it." She said.
