I hold onto Melody as she falls asleep in my arms. I never really appreciated how small she is. How easy it is to hold her. For now, I just hold her close and drift off into a restless sleep, knowing she'll be with me in the morning.

Same as always, I'm back at our old apartment. Once again, I relive the moment when I blew up. I was pacing around my room, hands pulling at my hair. I had to release this crippling frustration. I was hunched over and I let out a loud scream of outrage. I noticed a faint ring spread out from me and then the entire building shook and the fire alarm went off. Mom must have been nearby in the hallway because a second later, she came running in. She yelled at me to get out of the building, pushing me in front of her.

Gasping, I wake up to Melody's concerned face hovering over mine.

"Are you okay?" she asks quietly. I don't say anything, I just stare at her eyes. They are such a deep hazel. They are beautiful. She is still looking at me like she expects an answer. So I give her one. I pull her down and just smile as she gasps. It's a little closer than normal, but I need her to know that I am fine and to stop worrying so much. I need her to feel like everything is okay, even though, inside my head, it really isn't.

Finally, she turns and lays her head on my chest. I can feel her heart beating at the same time as mine. We lie there for a while. The world is so quiet, you could hear a pin drop. Suddenly, Melody's stomach rumbles—or is it mine—and we both burst out laughing.

"What's for breakfast?" Melody asks me as we get up from the floor. My only response is a quick smile at her as I tell her, "You'll see." She grins back at me, recognizing my signature phrase.

I tell her to wait in the bedroom while I go down to grab some food. There, I look at the menu. We are on a low budget because we need to save what money we have. Let's see, the cheapest meal for breakfast is eggs and toast. Getting into the line, I wait to order two eggs with toast. Can't forget to grab the butter and knives to spread it. After grabbing the food and eating it, we should start to leave for my home right away.
