(This is not necessary to read but it might help you understand some events later in the book)

"Jack!" My best friend Gwen appeared in the playground wearing her light dirty blonde hair in pigtails like always, complete with pink bows.

I waved at her from the top of the slide. She gave me a giant grin and skipped her way to me. I've known Gwen for 9 years. So basically my entire life. I'm turning 10 in 4 months.

Normally Gwen and I would play at the park, and talk about life, but today was different. Gwen was hiding something in her jacket.

"What's in your jacket?" I asked her. "You can't tell anyone." Ook. Why so secretive? I nodded. She reached into her jacket and pulled out a candle. At first I panicked, but then I realized it wasn't a normal fire. It was white and had a blue tint to it. It almost felt... calming. She was beaming, "A lady with blue hair and wings gave it to me. She said it was from the flame of a dragon, and it can bring people to life." Gwen sounded insane, but what was even more insane is that I believed her. "She said it would someday help alot of people if we used it well. We can only use it 4 times though..."

I was suddenly very intrigued. "We should read more about this at the library!" I stated. So we rode our bikes to the nearest library 3 blocks away. Gwen and I were like mini scientists. We did everything together.

Years later our friendship dimmed because getting older meant boy and girl friendships became weirder. I figured out Gwen had a huge crush on me, and decided it was time to let our friendship go. I was now more focused on my science experiments than ever. I think Gwen was hurt when I told her, but I knew she would never give up her studies for love either.

I knew where she kept the dragon flame. I now regret it, but one night I broke into her house at night and stole it. My grandma had passed that morning and I wanted to test the dragon flame out for the first time.

It spread all over her body once I dropped the candle, and she instantly woke. I can never forget that day, her skin became sagged and rotted looking, the color in her eyes faded, and she screamed. She screamed like she was in extreme pain. Her body started emitting white sparks and I realized I had made a big mistake. I had to do something. I grabbed the nearest heavy thing and killed her. Everything was a blur after that.

I bolted out the door and just ran. I ran for days. I found a new life, changed my name, and continued my studies, never to make the same mistake again.
