Chapter 3

The Order

We spent the next several days at my aunt and uncle's manor. It felt quite odd having Mum there too. I never thought that would happen considering how she felt about the magical world. I could tell she was furious about it but Aunt Becky said if she wanted to help me, she had to stay.

I found Mum sitting by the fireplace alone, resting her arm on the chair. Tinker came in with a tiny mug.

"Some tea, Miss Livy?" the little elf asked.

"Thank you Tinker," Mum said.

"Is there anything else Tinker can do for you, Miss Livy?" she asked.

Mum shook her head. "No thank you, Tinker."

Tinker started to walk out of the room but then turned her head back to add, "Tinker is glad to have you back, Miss Livy."

I could not read Mum's expression after that statement. It was as though she wanted to smile but could not. I then sat on the couch across from her.

"It has to be somewhat nice coming back here," I said. "Isn't this where you grew up?"

"I did not really spend a lot of my teenage years here," Mum said, quietly. "I just didn't belong."

"I kind of feel like that too, sometimes, back at home," I said, quietly, "but I still like being with my family."

Mum smiled, but just for a moment. It was the first time I have seen her smile in days.

Aunt Becky then came in the room to join us.

"Have you and your husband sorted this mess?" Mum asked, bitterly.

"Richard is working on the case," Aunt Becky said in a calm tone. "You two need to make sure you have prepared exactly what you are going to say."

"And what would that be?" Mum demanded.

"It's quite simple really," Aunt Becky said. "All you have to do is tell the truth, describe exactly what you saw."

Mum huffed. "I still don't understand why Melanie is on trial in the first place, where as all she did was defend herself."

"That's the thing, Livy. The Ministry doesn't believe there were actually dementors there," Aunt Becky explained. "They think Harry and Melanie are making it up to excuse the fact that they used illegal magic."

"How do we prove we're telling the truth?" I asked her, desperately.

Aunt Becky sighed. "Well, with your mum and Mrs. Figg, we have two witnesses for your case so that should help."

"What about Jordan Scott?" I wondered. "Even though he didn't see them, he still felt it. I could tell."

"Your uncle went to his house and altered the memories of the boy that was with you. He now just believes he fell ill and you helped him home," Aunt Becky answered. "The fewer muggles that know about our world, the better."

I looked up at her and asked, "What about Harry? Is he supposed to wait at his aunt and uncle's until the hearing?"

She shook her head. "At this moment he is being taken to the Headquarters for the Order of the Phoenix. Remus Lupin, Alastor Moody, and a few others went to get him."
