" You don't talk much do you?" I say to Meraki. He laughs, then says "Well what shall we talk about then?" As we were walking through the park at 1:10, it was bright and sunny out but it wasn't hot just the right temperature. We passed by some kids playing on the playground. It reminded me of when I was their age, playing with my little brother back in San Francisco. Our parents would take us and then we would always get ice cream after. I always liked running around or just being out in nature. The park was right next to a riverbed hidden under some trees. It always looked so majestic there. One day when I was about 10 I rode my bike to the same park that was down the street from my house and headed to down the riverbed. When I arrived there, there was a boy about my age playing his flute such a beautiful sight. When he saw me, he sprung up but I told him to pretend like I wasn't there and that he played beautifully. After a while he began to play again and looked out sitting on the grass a few feet from him, I knew I would never forget this. I looked over and he was dressed for a funeral, I figured he must have just come from one I even saw tears falling down his cheek. After he stopped playing we sat in silence. Then I finally gathered the courage and said "You play amazing, my name is Eunoia what is your name?" staring at the ground he told me his name but I forgot what it was so I just called him M since I remembered that's what it started with. I told him all about me and in return, he told me all about him. He was born in Seoul, Korea is 10 years old and is here because of his mom's funeral. I felt so bad for him and gave him a hug, he started to sob. I got up then brought my basket of lunch I was going to eat by myself and asked if he was hungry. We pulled out sandwiches my mom had made for me and some chips. I gave him a napkin to wipe his tears, he seemed to calm down when we started to eat. I made funny faces to try to make him laugh and boy did it work. By the time we were done eating we had laughed so hard it hurt.
He told he would be leaving at the end of August so we decided to meet up again tomorrow at 10. As the weeks passed through the summer weather so did our time together. We were insuperable. He would always meet me at the park. He became my best friend, the other half of me. My parents loved having him over and I met his father once. Before I saw him off to his plane we both gave each other gifts. He gave me a locket with a picture of us and I gave him a book filled with pictures and all our adventures together titled "The best times of our lives". He and I cried so much that day. We hugged each other so tight, then he had to go. It felt like my heart had just been ripped out of my chest, that day I vowed to always wear the necklace and that I would find him again.
I tried to call the number he gave me but no one answered. Day after day I called, still no voicemail and no pickup. He meant so much to me and I know I had to mean something to him, was it all a lie? I don't know but I had fun while it lasted and I always remember him. Who's knows, I might even meet him one day and we can chat like old times.
