The Beginning

It had been a long day of unpacking. I had just settled in to my tiny apartment in the middle of New York City. I needed a change, a fresh start. I grew up in a small town in Ohio called Dayton. Ever since I graduated high school I wanted out. No one wanted to see Dayton in their rear-view mirror more than me. So here I am, a small town girl with a degree in film, living in a tiny, over-expensive apartment with no family or friends. If this isn't the best way for a fresh start, I don't know what is.

I decided to take a break from setting up my place and go for a walk down the busy streets of Manhattan. I inhaled the warm, summer air and looked up at the sun setting sky. It was almost peaceful if you could tune out the endless horn honking and mumbling chatter of all the pedestrians. I decided to take a walk in Central Park, the only place in New York where it's possible to find quiet. I had been to New York a few times prior to moving here, but definitely not enough to know my way around. I finally found Central Park, sat on one of the huge rocks, and got out my book. It was fairly busy, mostly couples going on strolls or young kids riding their bikes. I sat alone, indulged in my book. The sky started to darken, and the crowd disappeared. After two hours, what felt like ten minutes, I decided to close my book and head home. I went to put my address into my google maps, only to realize my phone had died.

Damn it...I mumbled under my breath.

I start to walk down the path, searching for someone who's not homeless, creepy, or busy, to ask for directions. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw a girl sitting on a bench reading a book. I walked closer to her, to find out she's reading the same book as me.

"Excuse me?" I said softly.

She looked up at me. I focused and made eye contact with her piercing blue eyes. She was stunning. Her lashes were full, and her eyebrows perfectly shaped. Her long, dark hair slightly waved over her shoulders and her lips parted to speak.

"Hey, what's up?" Her voice was husky and modulated.

I immediately became nervous after seeing how beautiful she was up close.

"Uh. Sorry to bother you, but my phone died and I'm not too sure how to get back to my apartment." I couldn't stop staring.

"Yeah, New York can be tricky. Where do you live?" Her eyes not disconnecting from mine.

"I live at the Ansonia Apartments." I said, hoping she'll know how to direct me.

"No way. Me too." The brunette spoke, lacking emotion.

"Just head to 65th street, and follow Broadway until you reach 73rd street. You'll know where you are then." She directed me.

"Thank you! I guess if we share a building, I'll see you around." I walked away, fighting the urge to glance back at her.

I managed to find my way home, thanks to the woman's directions. I was very tired from the unpacking and walking so I went to the bathroom to brush my teeth and get ready to sleep. I headed to my bedroom, got undressed, and hopped into bed. I closed my eyes and couldn't stop thinking about the girl from the park. I've never seen someone so confident and attractive. The way her eyes looked at me, the confidence in her voice, her dark features. Everything together was so hot. To better it all off, she lived in the same building as me. I needed to see that girl again.

I wonder what her apartment number is... I thought to myself while dozing off.

My alarm went off at 7:00am. I got out of bed and had to job hunt. New York is way too expensive for anyone to live comfortably. I wanted to get a job in my field, the film industry, but because you have to start at the bottom, I applied to serving jobs. After an hour of non-stop applying, I went to go for food. I heard of this amazing pizza place down the street from my apartment I'd been dying to check out. I walked through the door, and immediately I saw that girl. She was sitting at a table with another girl, who was also very good looking. I couldn't help but wonder if that was her friend, her girlfriend, her sister. She couldn't possibly like girls. Any girl I tend to be attracted to is either straight or married. Usually both. I tried to forget about her presence and went up to the counter to order. I said what I want, paid, and waited for my combo off to the side. I couldn't control the urge to glance over at her. I found myself watching her eat, seeing her smile at the girl across from her, I couldn't help but stare. She looked over in my direction and before I could revert my eyes, hers came into contact with mine. She gave a slight smile and turned back to the blonde she was sitting with.

As I waited for my food I sneakily stared at the pair. I couldn't hear what they were saying but I was more focused on watching their body language, expressions and actively trying to figure out the relationship. They didn't quite look alike. The new girl I was looking at had light hair, dark eyes, thin lips and pale skin. Completely opposite to the girl in the park. They couldn't possibly be related. I felt myself get disappointed when I knew they weren't sisters. Regardless of knowing the possibility that they could be girlfriends, I couldn't resist staring at the brunette. She was just so incredibly beautiful. I felt myself daydreaming and now noticeably staring.

"Last call for for number four. Hello?" The pizza maker announced.

"Oh, that's me! Sorry." I snapped out of my zone and realized he was continuously calling my order out.

I grabbed my box and nodded at the girl I had been dreaming about on my way out.

My walk home wasn't long but the whole time all I could think about was if this mystery girl was into girls, if that was her girlfriend, what her name was. I had so many questions and could never forgive myself if I didn't at least try to find them out. I had a new purpose coming to New York, a new mission. I had to get this girl in my life.
