It had been a few days since my and Jessie's insufficient hangout occurred. I hadn't seen her since then. I figured that I came on too strong, maybe a little pushy. I mean, after all she is a stranger and I know absolutely nothing about her. She could have a boyfriend for all I know, a child even. I was still determined to get to know her but I figured maybe if I laid low for a bit, she'd come to me.
I tried to get my mind off Jessie. I had so much to do anyway, so I was thankful for the distractions. I needed to go job hunting again. I brushed my dirty blonde hair that had day old curls left in it, threw some makeup on, grabbed my stack of resumes and hit the streets. There had to be an unlimited amount of jobs I could find in Manhattan. Shitty job or not, I needed money. The neighbourhood I was in had lots of close restaurants. I served and was a bartender back home so I was hoping to find something like that in my comfort zone. I handed out a resume at every restaurant and bar that was within walking distance from my apartment.
After what felt like hours, I headed home from my long morning of walking, desperately trying to find work. Luckily, I had enough money saved to last me a couple months here without steady income.
It was only 1pm and I had nothing left to do with my day. I grabbed a coffee from Starbucks and enjoyed the walk back to my place. Although New York was hectic, it was beautiful. The tall architectural buildings that towered over the city, the diverse people, there was a certain charm to this big city. I understood why people loved it so much. I also understood how overwhelming it can be, with the constant chatter, honking cars, and thousands of people in a rush there was never a moment of peace.
I reached my building, got to my floor, reached for my keys, and as soon as I was about to enter my apartment I heard yelling. I instantly looked over and a familiar looking girl stormed out of Jessie's apartment and slammed the door behind her. It clicked that was the same girl I saw with Jessie at the pizza place. She power walked down the hall with an angry expression on her face, mumbling things under her breath. I looked the other way, pretending not to notice and entered my apartment. It was now clear to me that the girl had to have been Jessie's girlfriend. I was disappointed, but also shamefully happy they were fighting.
I had settled in and realized I was relaxing on my couch, watching endless romantic comedies all day. I had been lazy since handing out resumes. I was couch ridden and bloated from stuffing my face with snacks. My favorite part of No Strings Attached was about to play before being rudely interrupted by the ringing phone. I quickly paused the movie I had already seen ten times and answered the phone.
"Hello?" My fake phone voice answered.
"Hi, is this Skylar?" A deep voice questioned.
"Yes it is."
"This is Andrew from The Dakota Bar on 72nd Street. I looked over your resume and was wondering if you would be available to come in for an interview." The man announced.
"Yes absolutely. I have open availability." I was surprised that I got a call back so quickly.
"Perfect. Are you available to come in the next hour?" He asked and I agreed. I thanked him and we hung up.
I hopped off the couch I'd not moved from in the last couple hours. I got ready, made sure I looked presentable, and had to head out the door.
When I arrived at the bar, I asked for Andrew and sat down to wait for my interview.
"Hi, I'm Andrew." A man greeted me shortly after I sat. He was well dressed but had a scruffy aspect to him. His hair was sandy brown, curly and stubble covered around his lower face.
After about 30 minutes of being asked conceited questions, I had got the job on the spot. Andrew told me to come tomorrow for training so I could start right away. I was nervous, but relieved. Worrying about money is the most unsettling feeling in general, but especially in New York. I walked home from the bar, entered my apartment and got ready for bed, even though I had spent most of my day relaxing I was tired. I was slightly disappointed that I didn't run into Jessie in the hall or on my walk home. No matter how hard I tried, I just couldn't shake the thought of her. My brain went into so many scenarios of seeing that girl storm out of Jessie's place. I was so curious as to what relationship they had. I attempted to shake the thoughts of her and try to sleep.
