Summer
"Happy birthday," Janet sang in a scared yet happy tone. "Aww, thank you," I said with a hint of sexiness. Our conversation was interrupted by the doorbell ringing, causing me to jump in fear. I walked over to the front door, my heart racing with excitement and nervousness. I opened the door to find my dad standing there, a look of determination on his face.
"Dad, what are you doing here?" I asked, trying to keep my voice steady.
"I would never miss my daughter's birthday," he replied, pushing past me and entering the house. He was followed by a group of people, all of whom I didn't recognize.
"Summer!" Blossom exclaimed as she hugged me tightly. "Happy twenty-fourth birthday!"
"Thanks," I said, trying to mask my confusion. "Um, who are all these people?"
"Your dad invited them," Blossom replied with a smile.
I took my dad to the kitchen, my mind racing with questions. "Dad, can I talk to you for a second?"
"Sure, what's on your mind?" he asked, looking concerned.
"I don't know any of these people," I said, my voice trembling with fear. "Dad, I don't talk to anyone from school anymore."
He looked at me with disappointment in his eyes. "If you would just call or at least text me, I could have known what to do for your birthday," he said, his tone accusing.
"Dad, I've been busy," I replied, trying to defend myself. "I have final exams coming up and I've been studying non-stop."
"Don't lie to me," he said, his voice suddenly cold.
Before I could respond, my dad grabbed my wrist and twisted it, pulling me closer to him. "I missed you," he said, his voice filled with a mix of fear and desire.
"Dad, let me go!" I pleaded, trying to break free.
But he didn't listen. Instead, he kissed me forcefully, his grip tightening on my wrist. Suddenly, someone pushed him away and I turned to see Janet, her eyes blazing with anger.
"What the hell is your problem?" she shouted at my dad. "Don't you ever put your hands on her again!"
"You need to leave," Janet said, her voice firm and commanding.
My dad looked at her with pleading eyes, but she stood her ground. "Fine, I'll go," he said, walking towards the door. Before he left, Janet added, "And you're fired. I want all of your personal stuff out of your office by Monday."
As my dad left, slamming the door behind him, tears welled up in my eyes. I ran upstairs to my room and collapsed onto my bed, sobbing uncontrollably. Janet followed me and sat down next to me, pulling me into her arms.
"I told everyone the party was over and they had to leave," she said, trying to comfort me.
"Why did my dad have to ruin my birthday?" I asked, my voice cracking with emotion.
"I don't know," Janet replied, her voice gentle and soothing. "But you didn't deserve that."
I sniffled and wiped away my tears. "My dad has been ruining things for me ever since my mom died," I told her, my voice filled with bitterness. "He never got over her death."
"Is that why he did what he did earlier?" Janet asked, her voice soft and understanding.
I nodded, feeling a lump form in my throat. "He used to touch me," I said, my voice barely above a whisper. "It's been going on for years, ever since my mom died. He said I was the only girl left in his life and I had to do what he said. And I believed him. Why would I believe him?"
"You were just a little girl then," Janet said, her voice filled with compassion. "He was tricking you into believing him."
I shook my head, unable to hold back my tears any longer. "Can we not talk about my dad?" I asked, my voice quivering.
"Of course," Janet said, her voice gentle and understanding. "How about we re-do today all over again?"
I looked at her, confused. "What do you mean?"
"I have a surprise for you," Janet said with a mischievous smile.
She asked me to stand by the kitchen entrance and I did as she said. "You may come in," she said with a grin.
I entered the kitchen to find a beautiful, colorful cake waiting for me. "Where did this come from?" I asked, my eyes widening in surprise.
"I had a friend bake it for you," Janet replied, a twinkle in her eye.
I thanked her and she cut me a big piece of cake. We sat down at the kitchen counter and eat.
