a/n i have my first gcse soon and really need to revise so i might be posting a little less lately but will try to keep this story going (i'm almost at 1k reads!)

You glared down at your phone at the headline. Your stomach turned in knots and you had never had the urge to smash something as much as you did now. It wasn't like you had the right to be mad. He wasn't yours. Sure, he was your best friend, but he wasn't yours. He had the freedom to date whoever he wanted. You just couldn't help it that you were a little jealous that it wasn't you.

"Did someone kick your dog? You look a little upset."

You were broken out of your thoughts, and your eyes lifted to meet those of your other best friend. Joe was watching you with an amused expression on his face, and you slammed your phone down on the couch next to you.

"I'm not upset."

Joe laughed, turning back to flip through the magazine that he was previously leafing through.

"Clearly."

His sarcastic tone only made your mood worse, and you crossed your arms over your chest angrily. Your thoughts went back to the article, and you couldn't get the image of Ben and his other woman out of your head. It hurt even worse that you had no idea. You had just talked to Ben the day before and he had never mentioned anything about a date. You thought the two of you told each other everything.

You were still fuming when Joe's front door opened, and the man you had just been thinking about stepped through the doorway. You cursed under your breath at how good he looked, and then cursed yourself for looking at him for too long. When his eyes met yours, he gave you a giant grin that immediately faltered when he saw the look on your face.

"What happened?" He asked worriedly. Joe looked up from his magazine and his eyes moved from yours to Ben's.

"She's mad about something, but insists that she isn't. I figured she would spit it out eventually."

"I'm fine." You groaned, as you picked your phone back up to hide your now bright-red cheeks. You could feel Ben's eyes still on you, but you pretended to scroll through your news feed instead of looking back at him. Ben looked like he was going to keep pressing you, but he seemed to decide against it. Instead, his bright smile returned to his face as he raced over to sit next to you.

"You guys will never guess what happened to me yesterday!"

You felt your finger freeze over the screen of your phone, your heart pounding in your chest. Here it comes...

"I landed another role!" His green eyes were wide with excitement, and Joe instantly jumped up to congratulate him. The tension in your shoulders disappeared as joy for your friend filled your chest. The anger you had felt moments before was quickly forgotten as you threw your arms around Ben's neck and pulled him into a tight hug. Ben laughed happily into your neck as his arms wrapped around you.

"Congratulations, Ben! That's amazing." You cried excitedly, as you pulled out of the hug and held him back so you could look at him. Your heart swelled at how his face was glowing and you hadn't realized that the two of you had been staring at each other for so long until you were broken out of your trance by Joe clearing his throat.

"Do you want me to leave the two of you alone, or?"

You looked down at your hands, which were still clutching Ben's shoulders, and you quickly jumped away. Another blush was forming on your cheeks, but you turned your face slightly so that they couldn't see. Ben coughed awkwardly, and Joe laughed at the both of you.

So as to not make anything more uncomfortable, Joe quickly changed the subject and started asking Ben more about the movie that he was now going to be in. You listened intently, trying to not make it obvious that all you could think about was how warm his hug had been or how his lips had accidentally brushed against your neck when you had pulled apart.
