Sara came home from one of her delivery rounds, and Martha gave her usual welcome, " You are late!"

She yelled from inside through the open door. Her adopted mother never changed.

Martha was unfeeling, harsh women, and she never showed an ounce of love towards Sara. Sometime Sara thought she didn't know how.

Henry looked at Sara and rolled his eyes, "Here she goes again." The old guy just got ready to go home.

"Thanks Henry but I better go and make supper before she blows up the roof." Sara always had teasing and cheeky side to her despite her upbringing and surroundings.

With a grin Henry's way she walked inside.

Once Sara got in Martha just continued her grouching, "How come supper is not ready Sara? You are daydreaming half the time. Yes, you were always a lazy child." She went on while Sara tied her apron and added a few more logs to the fire.

"Sorry, but delivery took longer. I had to wait for Mr. Whity to finish putting together the order for Ewans's ranch."

"You always find the excuse for everything." She grumbled and went to her bedroom and left Sara alone in the kitchen. This was just fine with Sara.

Her thoughts returned back to Wes. He was her weakness, and she knew she could only dream of him.

He didn't hide his dislikes of her, and Wes was after all the Jade. They were powerful family and associated with the top society in the country. Sara didn't belong there. The little run down farm was all she had where she took care of her adopted mother and everything else on it.

Sunday arrived and she got ready for church. It was the only place where Martha accompanied her. Sara looked lovely in her simple light blue dress, it wasn't new but she didn't wear it much.Today was the church picnic. A few times a year church organized a picnic for the residence of Kenth to get together. It was held on the lawn behind the church. The tables were set and lined with food local women prepared.

Sara put on her finest dress, but compare to Rowena's dress it looked shabby.

To avoid Martha's criticism she always made for sure all her dresses were plain. During the service Sara watched Wes, and she hoped nobody noticed.

Every time their dark eyes met, she would lowered hers.

Her dark long hair was usually braided and coiled around her head, but on Sunday she let it flow down her back. It cascaded all the way to her lower back. Sara was beautiful, her lips were full and above it was her pert little nose. When she smiled her face lit up and her eyes sparkled. After the service like everyone else she headed outside.

The weather was sunny and hot and the few oak trees gave a welcoming shade. Sara placed a few apple pies she baked on the dessert table and a few loaves of bread on the main table.

She smiled at the children that run around and played games. This was the event where the children played , the local man struck deals with each other and woman catch up with gossip.

Jade family always attended on that day. At the moment they talked to judge Frey and his wife.

Rowena came out of the church with blacksmith's daughter Ann. She saw Wes and made the beeline straight towards him.

Her long skirts swayed around her ankles and revealed her new shiny shoes. She walked by Sara without acknowledging her. Sara wasn't in the rank with her, and Rowena looked down at her and usually avoided talking to her. When Sara delivered the vegetables to the judge's house, it was their cook she dealt with.
