Day after day Sara made supper, but when he got home he would announce he already ate at the ranch.
"Won't you come and eat Wes."
"Don't worry about me, and stop trying to make this marriage into something that it is not."
"What is our marriage Wes?" He looked at her with a hint of surprise in his eyes. His wife found her voice and she has brains.
"You didn't have to marry me! Why did you?" Sara tried to get an answer, but she wasn't getting it.
Finally, after a few moments he turned towards her, "Because of the child Sara, only because of that. Don't expect a doting husband out of me. You have a roof over your head, money, so you should be happy." It was a very terse reply.
"Happy? What is happiness without love?" She stared out the window, and tried not to look at him.
"Don't daydream. Love was never part of the deal." He held the banister with one hand and his foot rested on the first step.
"Don't ! Is that all I'm allowed to do? I'm sorry to hear that Wes. I feel sorry for you."
"No need to feel sorry Sara. I'll find my fun elsewhere. I'm not planning to change my ways for you. Rowena would understand that." He climbed up the stairs and disappeared down the hallway. His words cut deep into her heart.
After that day Sara stopped asking and always ate her suppers alone. She couldn't understand him. He wasn't even trying. 'What did she do so wrong?'
This was the man she's been in love for so long. Sara understood now it was only because she didn't know him.
She was rejected, and that was not new to her. Sara couldn't tell him his wealth didn't mean much. The cabin in the woods and his love would be her choice to this grant cold house.
He ignored her most of the time like she didn't exist.
Sara walked around and felt she was in a bad dream. The only good dreams she had were at night of the beautiful lady waiting to hug her.
It became clear to her she shouldn't have married him. She couldn't stand his cold attitude anymore. This huge house wasn't a home. It became her prison closing down on her.
Sara loved to sing, and one evening she sat on the porch and sang to her child. It was a rhyme she remembered from someplace.
Sara thought of her child and what kind of life would have here. She grew up without love. Her child will have all the love she never had. So far she hoped Nelly's words would turn out to be right and he'd come around, but it wasn't happening. It was the opposite. He grew more withdrawn and distant. Sometimes she thought she caught glimpse of longing in his eyes, but it would vanish before she could be sure.
He never took her to visit his parents and they didn't come up for a visit. It was obvious he didn't want them to come up here, and it was more and more obvious he didn't want her.
The only person she saw beside Wes was Mrs. Pears and a few maids twice a week. They would bring supplies and clean the house.
She made a decision to leave all this behind and start a new life. She owned that to herself and to her child. It wasn't a decision easily made and her chest felt heavy and she got frightened of the future.
She'll have to go far where he won't be able to find her. Sara didn't expect him to look anyway. While he was out she packed only what she brought with her.
On the way out she turned one more time and whispered into the wind, "Goodbye"
Sara didn't know what was waiting for her but nothing could be worse than this. He didn't want her. Her heart squeezed and she didn't look back.
